The Reason Why I Think Z8 Blocks Odd Words

So as many of you have likely noticed, the word "noob" has since been added to the list of curiously banned words, and many people are outraged because they have to come up with better ways to troll somebody for their lack of skill ("no skill" is also banned, so don't try).

The reason is rather complex, and not one that Z8 would really care to explain. But it all has to do with business.

Like any company, a business needs a way to earn money. Whether it be through physical purchasing, services, online goods or whatever, every company needs money to stay open. Z8's method is by offering you ingame perks for purchasing Z8 points. You rarely get anything permanent with your Z8 points, which many people are outraged about, but there's a very clever marketing reason behind it. Z8's philosophy is that if someone has $20 to buy 20000 ZP, they will have another $20 to buy 20000 more.

It's no accident that the Black Market is so tempting to fork all your ZP into and get very little in return. The overall idea is that you need to give the player reasons to buy more, like the reason of wanting to buy 25 crates for your beloved Gatling Gun over and over again until the weapon is won, even if your odds are 1/10000. Which is brilliant for Z8, as they are getting money in exchange for virtual goods, when the only thing they need to pay for is operating costs, salaries, etc. In the end, it screws the consumer. Z8 doesn't like me saying that, but they sure as hell know it's true. In CrossFire, it's easy to spend a little money, like $10 every week or two, which at first seems like hardly anything at all, but after two years, you easily could have payed a few hundred dollars, which is way more than any other physical game like Call of Duty or Halo costs, which offers everything all-in-one. It's great for Z8, and I have no problem with them doing this, it's the consumer's responsibility to watch what their spending. Z8 is not obligated to tell players about their money making strategies, which from a marketing stand point is fantastic.

But people don't buy ZP for any random reason, they need to think the game is super cool, even if they are terrible at it. If a new player joins a room and players horribly and is called a "noob," there's a 1/1000 chance that the person will be offended and uninstall CrossFire, thus canceling an otherwise potential purchaser of ZP. The same thing with "hacker." If a legitimately good player is called a hacker, the player could potentially get annoyed enough and leave the game for good, again, crossing out a potential buyer. Z8 will deny that it's all about the money, which is a slanderous lie, because money is everything in the private sector. Now that's not to say that they don't offer brilliant services and customer service.

The reason profanity is blocked is a twofold, one, a parent may not want a child playing in a game where the players are allowed to curse. And two, CrossFire is NOT rated for language on Online gameplay by ESRB, as allowing the F and the S word could potentially make Crossfire rated M exclusively for language.

But the funny thing is, all the filters do is just add a minor block in allowing a player to speak freely. Their thinking is:

Oh, they block "noob." So I'll just type "n0ob" instead.

Which makes the blocks completely pointless. Just like the F word easily stated by just omitting the 'c' from the word (same rule applies to "hacker").

So while you may think and not agree with what words are blocked ingame, there is a very logical reason. So you can go ahead and delete your would-be rage post- ;)

(If I came across a little harsh, I apologize, I feel very- odd. I witnessed a pedestrian crossing a highway and being fatally struck by a semi truck at 70 MPH near Denver this morning. The scene was horrific, and I've never thought so deep about something in my life. I've also never seen death first hand- so I feel very awkward as a result, sorry, long explanation :P)

  • It's pointless. I mean, if you can change anything of the word like put one "o" more on noob, like "nooob" the word will shows up, and some words which are not odd can't be spelled cuz of these filters.

I think we would have an option if you want to block the mature language or not. Many games have it, why the crossfire can't?
  • Well the game is rated T but most of the players are 10, or act like it. I honestly find it frustrating. At least fix it so you can type things like whisper me or i have no skills...its very annoying. I dont mind getting called a noob...I honestly really dont.

Yeah, that's why I think it's a feeble attempt. If anything, it's more annoying in the fact that it's near impossible to write a grammatically correct sentence without there being a profanity within a word or spanned between two words. A good example of what could happen:

    A player writes: ur haking

A response is: No obviously not. - But it appears as "???viously not"

Which if flat out annoying. If they at least re-wrote the filter I'd be okay.

Cuz you are used to the truth HAHA

Btw about the ZP, any company needs money, don't blame the Z8 for it. But they can really have more atention to the players instead only the desire of make money.
  • Yeah I understand that. Mods always say it. The main goal of a company is to make profit...but why do they care MOSTLY about money? Shouldn't there be some sort of balance?

    Agreed.
They're losing players with this attitude, the players who want a better game and invest time in the forum discussing to get a better game.

I know many of players (ZP buyers though) who stopped to play cuz the Z8 don't show any interest about the players community at all.

Yeah, the Suggestions category is a joke, it's a thread that Z8 NEVER reads and only to make the players believe their idea is being heard when it's really not. If my theories are lies then Z8 really has presented a bad reputation for themselves

All the censorship is done by the sending client in CF, before it even gets to the server. It really should be done by the receiving client, because then you could have a "disable word filter" option.

I'd just turn the filter off because if someone wants to call me a hacker or whatever, they'll find a way to do it, word filter or not.
  • Yeah, but why loose a thousand dollars to satisfy ur costumers ?

Think about it, they are smart, they know that if they satisfy our demands (i know you satisfy some :P) they may loose money because of it, since they are a business company, u obviously sarted it to get money not to make someone else life(or entertainment) better.

There are a very very few exceptions of course..

Look at me i have never bought any zp, i find it worthless since you can get some free(surveys).

However, making someone's life (or entertainment) better is a fantastic way to make money.
  • I agree with you, but crossfire is the only game that I've paid for.

    +
If only you knew what I've spent for CrossFire...
If all players paid as me like this, they could become rich in 1-2 days
  • I think this is the first game in the history of games that filters "noob". I don't even want to give other examples ( like "Jesus").

At the beginning i cared about it,but its a matter of time to completely ignore things like that.

If the satisfaction is over, theres no need to pay for something as youve got what you wanted(its like that for me).

Oh yeah-you're completely correct. Spending $20 on ZP every month doesn't seem like much. I've played for two years, and almost paid $300- the only ZP gun I have is the Custom.

However, because I've matured a bit- I'm starting to decide not to buy ZP anymore until I can get more back. $300 is a lot of money for one person-and how am I treated? Like any other player. My hacking report support tickets are almost never fulfilled. Customer Support doesn't have the decency to write Grammatically correct sentences- or respond within a week of my tickets Likewise they didn't bother spell checking their website or the Crossfire client- as I seem to come across countless spelling mistakes.

On the other hand- I could pay a flat $60 and be able to play Call of Duty Blackops - which includes way more features and way more players with exponentially better graphics, not to mention you don't have to spend ANY more money.

Again- I may have said it harsh, but I like Z8 Games. I like how leaders like Saidin have this presence that makes people want to interact with him. However, I think Z8 is lacking a professional appearance. Even I aspire to become a mod one day, but I recognize there's no chance as long as I keep revealing a darker side of Z8. I'm not trying to defamate them, I just want them to recognize that the players ought to be heard. Sure there's a suggestions category in the forums- but that's just for the self satisfaction of players with disputed ideas and are never hardly read by Z8. I'm a huge conservative guy- I strongly dislike it when people are not granted power, especially when the people are paying the employee's salaries, bit by bit.

I've done several of these rants, but on inappropriate threads. Eventually someone is going to find a rule and skew what it means in order to delete this- but until then, I will report Z8's problems to the players so they can understand why we want to be hear- all in a civilized manner.

^ Thanks for proving my point! :D
  • Chat filter is easy to bypass its a waste of time
  • the censorship is gettin' bad, and they need to fix it

(example) i like the FAMAS, but its ammo is low (shows as - bu??? ammo)
  • Good theory, but filters for a Teen game are a requirement.

Z8 can pick and choose what they filter and the word Noob is a general insult, not an observation like it was originally intended. Same with hacker. More often the not the person isnt hacking and that can just get annoying.

Besides if there was no chat filter, people would be complaining that there isnt one...

+1 On that one. Completely Agree with that one.
  • idk if u guys have notice but they blocked the word "afk" now u have to spell it all out "Away from keyboard"
  • We are playing a game which death is the main subject. Plus, last time i checked this game is rated 15+. I highly doubt that 15 year olds will find these words offensive. The censor system is pointless. They could just add a profanity filter like RuneScape, that would make things ALOT better. But that's just a day dream.

Its 13+ actually. Did you read my post at all?
  • yes the main reason for blocking odd words is money, but the filter doesn't work on some languages, for example i'm portuguese and i can curse all i want in my language. A very high number CF players are portuguese and brasilian so why doesn't the filter work with the portuguese language?

Yes, but the general majority of players are English speaking. However I am aware of at least one non-English word that is blocked.

I totally agree on the marketing plan. However, "parents may not want their kids to play in a game that has curses"? wtf? This game is about shooting people in the head..blowing up people with grenades..and knifing. Not to mention your part about people being offended by the word "noob"..censoring could also lose potential ZP buyers..since this game is getting more and more ridiculous..its not a kids game. Also, all the potential ZP buyers are the older group of the community..which i believe would also appreciate if the word was unblocked.
