It's not Z8's fault that the operating system needs to be replaced. Most generally it is what the end user has allowed to transpire on their machine from malicious scripts and programs.

The X-trap error in this thread has nothing to do with viruses. Please show me an x-trap error here that is related to a virus other than your own 'word'. Also for the people with different errors, X-trap picking up system graphics drivers is not a virus and is something on specific OS's

The operating system will be working properly after a drive wipe and fresh install becasue there are no more malicious code hooking into the operating system. Being able to update it's self properly is a perk of having a clean running machine.

    Refer to the above.

Those discs are easily obtainable. You should contact your PC manufacturer to obtain them if you don't have them and want to use them.
Some PC's sold nowadays even have a separate partition on them for system recovery...

I don't see why you would go through all the hassle for a disc, system recovery (restoring to factory settings) wont work if you've been attacked by a rootkit that goes into MBR level, or has tools to corrupt vital restoring data.

I fail to see your understanding of how you think that it is possible to run a system hampered with malicious code that everything will be just fine and dandy.

So in your personal opinion you don't think that crossfire.exe is an executable in and of it's self that calls on other resources in a system that is being manipulated and damaged by rootkits and other malicious code is just a foolish assumption on your part.

    I gave two examples ;
    W__hawk wrote: »
sure maybe it will block exe's from running on the local machine, or allow restricted access on the machine, but it will not conflict with crossfire.

I didn't say crossfire.exe was not an executable file, I just didn't correctly word my argument. If your machine was not allowed to run ".exe" files, then you would have noticed this well before the 'xtrap' fail because HOW would x-trap even start if ".EXE'S" were blocked? It wouldn't therefore there would be no error or x-trap launching for that matter, which obviously leaves you the the other suggestion, restricted access.

That makes your "rootkit" argument invalid.

Because people intentionally download viruses LOL! Rootkits travel through java drive by's or any drive by exploit for that matter, simply because you can infect a numerous amount of people so much faster with compromised pop-up's or an applet on a "hacked" website and they wouldn't have known it happened unless it was too late.

    No hack for Cross Fire install rootkits on peoples machines, they are not smart enough for that type of thing although it can include;

    Key logging
    FTP jacking
    RAT

Sorry for the late reply, very busy day.

Same, Xtrap is freezing again. Can't get on until someone posts a link to the new files.
  • This Xtrap BS is really getting on my last nerve ive spent so much damn money on my two account for me to keep dealing with errors everytime a new patch comes out

For some understanding on the issue.

We know why you can't download the x-trap update. The reason has to do with the X-Trap servers and we have a solution for it. You should be able to download the X-trap update and play CF as normal in a couple of hours.

The reason why the file fix in the original thread here doesn't work any more is because it is now the old version of X-Trap.
  • i downloaded the file and watched the video and i dont understand how to merge it

ive tried everything u said from deleting xtrap and hgwc and I still cant get it. I have no idea what you did in the video with the replacing and I don't have WinRAR either so if you can help me I would be very happy

I download and replace this in my crossfire folder, worked since the beginning not loaded, but then I came back the error says "the acces to X-trap patch server is unstable or x-trap update Was not able to run properly. Please, restart game. should I do?

run crossfire as "Run as Administrator" :) , click on CrossFire Shortcut with mouse2 and "Run as Administrator" see if it's work :D

How to work your CROSSFIRE again :
you need to download the link and put in crossfire folder where already exist ..
(if still not work delete HGWC FOLDER AND XTRAP FOLDER (if you get error when you try to delete then REBOOT/RESTART PC and try again) .)

After some investigation on 148 players that i have gone in they computer's with Teamviewer i found some suspicious files in WindowsSystemXP/7 , some files remain on the hard drive even after reinstalling Windows , they remain there in the hard drive .... , suspicious files come from hackers/unknow programs/suspicious websites like frezp/xX/freemoney/useless programs and many more where is in every free forums / websites ... to permanently get rid of these files need to completely format the hard disk..

    About WindowsXP :
Mostly times errors in Windows XP have because it is the easiest to use and breaks down faster because dont have updates as has windows7/8 and for hackers make them easier work .

My advice is to install windows but not before completely hard disk format,
if you do not allow your computer to install windows 7, install windows xp but format hard disk .[/SIZE]

No W_hawk. You have already been proven wrong. I will not argue with you when you admitted yourself that you don't even know what you are talking about then try to change your argument. Hence Nuff Said.

If a rootkit was blocking EXE's from running how would you even launch crossfire, and how would crossfire execute xtrap/hgwc?

    IT WOULDN'T.

Proven wrong how, by giving two examples of ways which they work? You still haven't shown me an x-trap error on this thread related to rootkits, you do not have a point.

    Example a.) EXE's blocked

Answer: if they were blocked you couldn't launch the game. It's logical to move onto the next statement, which in this case is b

Example b.) Restricted access, meaning certain functions on the PC would be disabled BUT you can still run crossfire on the system which is infected. Features that can possibly be disabled when this occurs:

Permanently disabled firewall ; error code when trying to enable it (can be fixed)
Limited Administrator actions ; Not allowed to run certain things on the computer
Redirects ; directed to certain websites which give the creators some sort of currency or another infected website
    Shortcuts disabled; obvious
    Task Manager disabled; obvious
Corrupted Anti Viruses or scanners; obvious

And many more functions that it can come with.

I've got lunch at the moment so I have enough time to listen to your lies, please do carry on. If not i can always reply later.

Source(s): Myself, since i've been infected with a ZeroAcess rootkit a number of times on my test window machines or main machines for that fact.

George already proved you wrong with his detailed analysis from the get go. Are you punch drunk or just stupid? The systems he worked on that needed drive wipes had rootkits in the hard drives that a normal reinstall of windows wouldn't erase. Only a format/drive wipe would eradicate them.
You already lost your point to me when you said it was fine and dandy to continue running a machine with malicious code in it and not need to worry about it. As much as you talk out the side of your head I hope you choke on a bone!

The only thing he mentioned by 'malicious' programs was the bots; that's why he was referring to the %appdata% and "mymacro" location, how is that a rootkit? maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions and start assuming things.

On another note; when did i speak to George? Never. My reply's have been directed at you.

My response after i knew he didn't have much clue what he was talking about:
    W__hawk wrote: »
It's not like his botting or anything the error is caused by certain graphics drivers.. I cant seem to replicate the error with any of my pc's though. :(

What OS is that? Can you give me the exact Windows version, bit and service pack. I would like to test it out for myself. My windows XP 64 home edition/vista/win 32/ win 7 64 are all working

The original post was edited by there was a screenshot of a file being picked up, in the system32/drivers location or a location from that kind. You can find the file in other threads or ask people with similar problems.

Just to clarify here, I'm not hating on the OP.
  • Let's everyone take a step back here and realize that this thread is for helping people, not to argue with people.

We appreciate the wDGEORGE with this thread.

We've address the X-trap patching issue from a server level, it should be fixed for all users.

I'm not going to close this thread as it contains useful information as a whole, but the original issues should be fixed. Should they happen again we'll have our teams look at the problems.
  • George has done a great service for the community. I'm very pleased to see you give him the recognition that he deserves.
I'd like to add that even though the naysayers disagree with him about eradicating malware I fear that they are very lacking in their general knowledge on the subject by saying that allowing malicious code to run on a machine is nothing to worry about.
    That is not correct.

Here is some simple literature which I have pulled down from the web which will better their understanding.
A rootkit is a type of software designed to hide the fact that an operating system has been compromised, sometimes by replacing vital executables. Rootkits allow viruses and malware to “hide in plain sight” by disguising as necessary files that your antivirus software will overlook. Rootkits themselves are not harmful; they are simply used to hide malware, bots and worms. Rootkits get their name from the Unix term for the primary administrator account called “root” and “kits,” which refer to the software pieces that implement the tool. To install a rootkit, an attacker must first gain access to the root account by using an exploit or obtaining the password by cracking it or social engineering such as in someone installing cracks and hacks for games devised for delivering a malicious payload. Rootkits were originally used in the early 1990’s and targeted UNIX operating systems. Today, rootkits are available for many other operating systems, including Windows. Because rootkits are activated before your operating system even boots up, they are very difficult to detect and therefore provide a powerful way for attackers to access and use the targeted computer without the owner’s notice. Due to the way rootkits are used and installed, they are notoriously difficult to remove, almost always needing a low level format of the drives they are installed on. Rootkits today usually are not used to gain elevated access, but instead are used to mask malware payloads more effectively.
Nearly every expert agrees with me that is safer, easier, and less time consuming to format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system from clean media if it is infested with rootkits to prevent data theft and manipulation of the equipment than to fiddle endlessly with tools which may not even find and remove them.
My personal opinion is that George is absolutely correct in his procedures of doing a drive wipes/formats to be certain you're 100% clean and safe from malicious and unwanted code.
    Boo to his haters.

    Props to George!
  • Yet there is no sign of a rootkit, nor will you link me to a 'rootkit' post, and simply dodge my question, or my points that i stated, try not to be so oblvious.

Yes we are all aware that viruses have affect on machines, thx for that captin obvious. Rarley will it affect crossfire unless your talking about preformance wise, ping spikes, constant disconnects, blue screens and so on.

I feel you are doing this on purpose to attempt to open a flame war, but its not working.. If you have anything to say feel free to PM me, and stop clogging up other peoples threads with usless advice / posts and false information.

Any futher junk replys from you on this thread will be ignored.
