Incompetence or just stupidity?

  • I'm 24 years old. I wouldn't classify that as a teenager.

    Denxi:

I will be MORE than happy to moderate every little insult that happens on the forums. You know I would. But where is the line drawn? I made a judgement call (clearly not right in everyone's eyes) that attacking someone's personal life as sensitive as a divorce? YOU may not view a divorce as being that bad, but maybe the other person does.

Trash talking is trash talking. It's going to happen, I agree. You call someone ugly, they call you stupid. That's juvenile. But attacking someone's personal relationship that they had and then making fun of the fact that it ended in divorce? On a public gaming forum? Come on.

Do I agree that the sections should be equally moderated? Of course. Do we have enough Moderators to handle this community? Yes. I don't believe the problem is in the amount of Moderators we have. It's in the fact of making that judgement of where the line is. If we DID crack down on every single little insult, we might as well pack up and go home. Everyone will hate us only that much more. So, in the best interests of the community, some things are left open.

What JShaw165 said about Bobby's personal life? He damn well knew what he was doing in trying to cause problems. Don't sit there and say he didn't. That personal attack was not located in an argument, JShaw165 created the thread to make fun of / attack Bobby and his personal life. That's not necessary, plain and simple. I ALWAYS try and delete threads that are directed at a single person, especially intended to cause trouble. But again, I can't be here all the time. Criticize me for my decision if you will, but what he did was not necessary. Call me hypocritical? Fine. Every insult thread and post I find from now on, WILL be infracted and enforced. Hope everyone is ready.

Im suprised you did not close the thread after you gave your 2 cents on something so no one eles can argue.

Be my guest. I'm not shy about what I did.

Yep, it's great, although I played with the crap mouse that came with my computer for 3+ years, so my standards are pretty low xD

Please re-read my post. I do not condone ANY insult in regards to ANY other topic than CF skill. I do not support JShaw's descision IN THE SLIGHTEST. Your descision was 100% the correct one.

Re-post after you've re-read with this in mind.

    Why is it that people are allowed to get away with insulting something personal, such as looks, on any typical member of the community, and yet when the topic of the divorce of a prominent community figure is brought up, it becomes modded almost immediately? Although I don't agree with any personal attacks of any subject, the system seems skewed. I have read claims that "mods can't see everything." Considering that all a MOD needs to do is read a thread to see if there's anything wrong with it, one has to wonder;

Call it what you will, skewed or otherwise. This is the judgement call I spoke of on my initial reply. Trash talking in a gaming forum is almost guaranteed. Someone calls you ugly, you call them stupid, and it goes back and forth. Sure, its a personal attack, but here is where that line is decided. If we DID 100% crack down on forum rules in regards to insults and personal attacks, what would the result be? I doubt it would be very positive. MODs would be looked at in an even WORSE light for being too strict. I was speaking about JShaw as an example to that, I drew that line at an attack on someone's divorce. That's too personal and crosses the line. Just used that as an example. We can't be everywhere all the time and trust me I TRY to read through as much as I can, but sometimes you just don't catch everything. It happens. My apologies for that.

Why is it that the section of the forum which contains the largest amount of ego is modded so infrequently? Countless insults are bandied back an forth, but it seems that moderation is more aimed towards the other areas. I willl admit that OT contains the most ignorance and stupidity, but even sections like the Barracks seem to have more moderation than Competitive.

I agree this section SHOULD be moderated more. I have just recently found myself in this section more because of my NESL ties. Should I have paid more attention to it before? Other Moderators should pay more attention to it? Probably. There is a lot of ego here and rules should be equally enforced. No argument there.

    Denxi wrote: »
Or am I wrong on both counts, and you're just telling me that a small personal attack is ok, but a large scale one isn't? If that's the case, where is the line drawn? I don't recal any rule section telling me that it's ok to make fun of someone for having bad hair, but that it's not ok to make fun of someone for having cancer.

Hell, why is ANY personal insult being tolerated in the first place?

I spoke of this further up. There IS a line. However, that is OUR line to judge, not yours. Would you write on an official company's forum rules that it's okay to call someone ugly but NOT okay to make fun of someone with cancer? No. We make that call as Moderators and I FULLY admit that we are not always right. We do try to do our best and even then it's sometimes not good enough for every user here. It's a harder job than it seems, especially when making those tough judgement calls.

Thanks. I get more threads made about me in a day, then you've had in your entire time being on these forums. It means this, people seek for my guidance, not yours, not any moderators, mine. Why? They want someone they can trust to help them build their computer, to help them give advice for anything that's related to technology.

I think it's fairly evident that I have a firm grasp on this community. It's been like this since closed beta.

No, because youre the only one here offering the advice.
  • . . .

    2 major things.

Moderators are not supposed to be liked by the community. Moderators exist to do their job; enforcing the rules of the community. If a moderator cannot take the insults and hate that stem from that, then they should not be a moderator. If a moderator cannot enforce the rules, even if he doesn't agree with them, then he should not be a moderator. I have respect for Bobby because he took a ton of **** for enforcing pretty crappy rules on WOGL's part, even though he didn't agree with them. All a moderator can do is enforce the rules to the ebst of his or her ability, and hope that the community is mature enough to understand why.

Running inconsistent rules is ridiculous. Having a community where you can be banned for different things at diferent times is ridiculous. Not setting a consistent standard for moderation is ridiculous. A system with a constantly fluxuating ruleset is ridiculous.
  • Denxi wrote: »

    1 Major Thing.

    This community isn't.
  • Yeah perhaps you're right. Honestly I don't pay that much of attention to the Competitive Section, simply because I don't understand most of the threads. So when I supervise, I check the threads which the title make me look at, because I know the subject or perhaps i can give a little hand to the OP. The rest I leave for the more competitive MODs to check.

Not passing the guilty to anyone. When one of us screws up the whole team is affected. It's always like that. But I simply didn't feel like checking a thread which I don't understand its main purpose. But I see now that there is in fact a moderation flaw on the competitive section. I'll then start to check every thread and have zero tolerance against insults.

About TastyLimes. As far as I don't trust him to check my hardware (I have my own ways), he seems to have helped a lot of people recently. And personally if he wants to stay then fine. If he screws up he will be infracted/warned/banned like any other user would be. It's that simple, I don't separate the community in two slices when it comes to warn.

I've nothing against him, he didn't do any harm to me, yet I think I should state clearly my opinion on these matters.

You aren't offering any advice? Pretty sure if a mod was asked a question, they would answer it.

One post of mine makes more of an impact to this community than 200 of yours. If you weren't a moderator, you would be an ant in this community, too small to even be noticed. Even with that moderator title, your presence isn't recognised as much as mine.

So this is a "Who has the biggest e-peen" contest?

I dont offer PC technical advice. In fact. Neither do you really. You help people build a pc on a budget.

If I was such an ant around here, why was I selected as a Moderator out of applications? I obviously made a big enough impact for the GM's to recognise me and want my help.
Your presense is met by your hacking claims. Not for youre worth as a person or forumer.

Regardless, Im not in the slightest interest. Im more interested in my personal life and what im doing tomorrow with mates then how many posts I can get on a forum with pasted information from Neweg to make me feel worthwhile.
True, your name is more recognised than mine... for the wrong reasons and nor do I care either.

I wasnt attacking you in my first post on this thread. Yet you respond in such a way that tries to make you look bigger than me over the internet?

Now lets get off this train and get back to the discussion where everyone seems to think the Moderators are incompetant because we follow our own CoC about us using our own judgement to decide if a person has gone too far. A bit of banter and trash talking can be fine as long as it isnt completely ovber the top. As Polleus said, its inevitable and will happen.

If you all want us to crack down on every insult on the forum with an infraction or ban.. Then so be it. This is clearly what you all want.
  • Getting divorced isn't even a big deal? When two people don't belong with each other they divorce. Simple as 1+1!

This is prety much my stance here.

Im not a competitive player. I dont want to deal with anything about it and ive noted my hatred to that side of gameplay purely based on the community and their immature behaviour.
Id rather leave it to a Moderator that knows what theyre doing in that field such as Bruce.

I actually do not have a problem with Tastylimes. He has somewhat helped me aswell.
Ill go as far to say that he is ok as a person.. not a forumer. He's never personally attacked me (until now) but we have rules for him to follow. If he doesnt, its an instant ban. Not and infraction. Hes had enough chances. One screw up is all we need.

That's irrelevant. If a Moderator cares what the community thinks of him, he's doing his job wrong. I hate Greycloak, but he was one of the better Mods here; from what I saw he was consistent, and enforced the rules whether or not it would make him popular.

This is exactly why threads get closed, people leave the game, people leave the forums. Simply because you have unknown idiots that hasn't made it further then a Clan Server Scrim. To talk trash to people who actually try to do something good for this community. You're truly a joke and everyone around you.

Big enough impact to realise your application? Give me a break. Having a certain post count and history of threads that are about how good this game is doesn't count as making any impact. I didn't even know who you were until you became a moderator, that right there tells me you made absolutely no impact. You know you've made an impact when you're talked about in this game.

You clearly never saw my posts. I never made one thread praising Z8 or defending them in such a way that I was begging for Moderator. All I did around here was help people in multiple ways. Tech Support. General questions that I could answer, help the GM's with things. That sort of stuff. Not kiss-assing.

You cant really judge a moderators consistancy. You cant see if we infract someone. Greycloak told the user they were going to be infracted, thats why you see him enforcing the rules.
Not all of us do that.

Would it be more beneficial for you to post somewhere that im going infract a user to show the work we do? Warn the threadstarter before we close or delete a thread?
  • I've yet to see Polleus make a huge mistake. Polleus, is one of the better mods. He could Easily hand out infractions left and right. He simply just doesn't because he gives chances, because its obviously trolling. Polleus, is more of a laid back kind of chill guy. Polleus has put up with enough of peoples crap, that over half of the Competitive community would be ban. I honestly think Z8 games should go to the two(2) or three(3) account policy. Would help a lot. It would either one, cut down on the trolling, or two get rid of the kids who simply can't keep there mouth shut. I've said my word on this.

I'm obtaining his consistencey through the way he treated people. Everyone was a forumer. Through that I can assume that he was consistent in general.

If we're all going to waste time on a forum and game, why not waste that time to build up your e-peen? That's how I view it, the more publicity I get, the better. Whoever says otherwise is mad they aren't in the spotlight. Trust me, it feels great stomping on ant's all day.

Then thats your opinion and life. I guess I wont stop you with that unless you decide to break a rule. Feel free to grow over the internet but dont do it by trying to degrade others. It doesnt work on me.

Let me teacher you some tips.
If you're going to troll, you should at least do the following:

1.) Use spell check on www.google.com
2.) Be known around a little bit.
3.) Start with something basic, make it go big.
4.) Don't use the same "troll" every time.
5.) Know the person well enough you're trolling, so you don't look like a total idiot in front of the whole community.

    I hope these tips work.
