Potential Solution
For those of you who are computer savvy and want to try.
I have forwarded the ports and it still didn't work for me (first time) so if you want to try yourself port forwarding made easy with a program call PFConfig and if you find a (crack) to register it then do your thing if you want to know what the ports are here.
Crossfire Ports
10009
13008
You might do better than me if so help us all man help us all.
Any questions about where to download my answer is Google is your friend.
If you know what your doing.
(If you want the entire program and crack email me) Its just 2.98MB.

The first solution, although not optimal, is to connect your computer directly to your modem rather than the router. This should resolve the problem.
The second solution is a little more detailed. Consult your router's documentation on how to either disable the router's firewall, or place your computer in the demilitarized zone (DMZ). Unfortunately because of the sheer number of different routers I am unable to provide a how-to here on the forum. If you are not using a router, be sure to allow all traffic from the the following IP addresses:
SERVER1=74.200.6.161
SERVER2=74.200.6.163
Here are links to the support pages of the most common router manufacturers:
Linksys
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/EU/en/support
Netgear
http://kb.netgear.com/app/
Belkin
http://www.belkin.com/support/
If you would like to try and find the router settings for yourself, you can follow these steps to get to the router's setup screen:
- Go to http://www.routerpasswords.com/ and find the default password for your router
- Open a command prompt window
- Enter IPCONFIG and press enter
- Write down both the IP address and Default Gateway
- Open your web browser and browse to the default gatewayfrom the last step
- Example: if the Gateway was 192.168.1.1, enter http://192.168.1.1
Enter the username and password and you will be presented with the router's configuration page. Look for security and/or firewall options. If trying to move the computer to the DMZ, use the IP address that was listed when you did IPCONFIG.
Once the router's firewall is disabled or the computer placed in the DMZ you will want to make sure that the windows firewall is active, as you will no longer be getting firewall protection from the router.
If you need assistance with this issue, feel free to visit us in the Crossfire IRC chat. The link is in my signature. If I am online and available I would be happy to walk you through the process of configuring your router.
[UPDATE 5/30/2010]
Earlier today I assisted someone on IRC that has been experiencing this error. Upon checking out his router settings, I noticed that the firewall was set by default to a very strict blocking mode. One I added the Crossfire ports of 13008 and 16666 to his firewall exceptions he was able to play without error.
I urge everyone who is experiencing this problem to familiarize yourself with firewall settings, especially router firewalls. There are far too many different models of routers for me to make a specific guide. As always, if you see me in the IRC chat I can assist you with this in realtime.
dude i have no router just a modem and i have the same problem so now what do i do???? i think its just crossfire cause didnt happen to me till the last patch -
Another day another ...fix?
Ammm hi again, I've posted like 3 replys in this specific thread because I am one from the bunch of ppl that can't play CF because of an unsenseless error, despite the fact that I've spent money on this and I can't get a solution well yesterday I couldn't play either until I downloaded the last and newest version of game boostar, and of course downloading the game again. I had a night of decent play and also this afternoon, unfortunately I can't play again right now, so I urge everyone to try different solution day by day until we get tired of this and send z8 to hell! -
lol
Have you guys noticed the hidden part of the greycloak's guide ?

Well, Ive added these ports to my router's exceptions manually and... still nothing.
Know wat? Then I turned off the UPNP service both on my router AND PC firewall (plus the additional service that automatically enables upnp, i forgot what was its name) and there you go, 7th match today without a dc.
This may be a temporary solution, but I did some research on upnp service and noticed that it causes my router to drop half of packets sent. This gives us a 50% packet loss.
It seems that (in my case) I was getting the disconnects because the server had no response from my pc for too long because of packet loss - so it disconnected me.
Hope this helps. ( Remember that Virtual Server option means the same that Forward Port)
EDIT: It seems that Greycloak suggested to add exceptions for ports 16666 and 13008. Crossfire FAQ page (support centre) says that in order to play Crossfire effectively you have to enable ports of 13008 and 10009 however. I myself forwarded the ports of 13008 and 10009 only and the game seems to be working fine. Do what you want, I don't know what kind of flow port 16666 is desired for however. -
Catches of the mind can not understand the instructions, because I come from the Polish and I do not know English so well. I would like to congratulate for the excellent patch z8games the truth did you manage that now hundreds of people can not safely play in the crossfire. In the crossfire play from the beginning and has never been so disappointed in you. You should do this as soon as possible to the people of the new patch everything worked. Once again, congratulations, as usual, something goes terribly wrong

@kingnoprahs
I'm not sure if it's the same problem if you don't have a router but you should try adding those ports to your firewall exceptions.
To do so go to start->control panel->firewall (settings)->exceptions->add port
Then... add those ports (10009, 13008, both udp and tcp so there should be like four exceptions for crossfire in the end).
It's just a suggestion and NO I don't know if it works you have to check it for yourself. -

JUST TAKE AWAY THE PATCH MAN -
calm down. Have you read my previous posts? You have to disable upnp as it seems to be messing up (especially) wireless connections.
Then add those ports to the firewall exceptions ( if you have a router, do it on the router as well) and everything (should?) be fine.
Erm.
I'm not really responsible for the patch.
Actually I'm not from z8 at all. -
Id close this information thread and find
another way around the error , or z8 could
attempt to fix the error.
My reasoning ,
1. This isnt a for sure way to fix the error ,
more of a hypothesized study into the cause.
2. Your posting on a video game forum ,
in which alot of children play the game supported.
The chance that they know the risk's
they're going to take disabling
their router's firewall are slim to none.
This generally isn't a way around an
"in game" problem , im more leneant
toward's the z8 team picking up the
slack and fixing the error.
The only way that a game error could
occur , is if the problem was "in game".
There is no possible way that a router's
firewall could inflict "in game" problem's.
Put simply they need to use some of that
"zp money" that the community provides ,
in accordance to "in game" points , to fix
Crossfire error's if they want to keep
paying customer's happy.
Not all kid's ask their parents for help ,
knowing that , your basically putting it out
their for them to attempt and destroy their
own computer's by doing this.
And if the z8 team took care of "in game"
problems as they should , then we wouldnt
be having this situation in the first place.
Just a hint from the wise.

I agree with those that have said this is not a solution, but a temporary workaround, at best.
Before the last patch, we did not have this problem. After the patch, we did. How then can this be called a fix? There is something wrong in the patch, and it needs to be fixed. Knowing ways to work around the bug should provide some insite as to where the bug lies. Get to it!
