Hard Drive Partitioning: Raise your FPS in 15 minutes
Sup guys, i just discovered a viable way to increase your Crossfire FPS on most computers: hard drive partitioning!! .
It's not nearly as hard as it sounds, and you don't have to go into the BIOS to do it .
K, first off download this program, it's free and easy to use.
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
All right, once you install the program, follow these steps exactly:
1) Click on your main hard drive (default C:) and select "resize partition"
2) Lower the total storage space by 3-4 GB (this'll help a lot later on)
3) Click OK
Next, go to "Unallocated Space", which should now read as the amount you put aside.
1) Click it and select "Create Partition" on the left side of the screen
2) Set the size to whatever you set aside in the first steps (i recommend 3 GB)
3) (optional) Name the drive and set it's letter
4) Make sure it's NTFS, and click OK.
Now exit the program, and a message should pop up asking if you want to apply the changes. Click "Apply All" or "Apply" and if it doesn't prompt for a reboot, restart your computer.
Now just let it do the rest
All right, now that the hard part's over, just take your Crossfire folder and copy it all into your new partition. After that:
1) Uninstall CF (since that's the one on the C drive, and it'll interfere if you don't uninstall)
2) After the copying's done, go into the folder and find "CF_G4Box.exe"
3) Create a shortcut of the .exe and put it on your desktop
And it's done!! Then use a defragmentation tool (I recommend Puran Defrag since it'll move every file of your new partition towards the fast end of the drive) to defrag any fragments (duh ).
Have fun, this should raise your FPS by 10-25 depending on the map and number of players
Comment, and tell me if this method worked for you
P.S. Use Gamebooster with CF after this whole process is done for a slight extra boost

Humm, I will try this.
I didn't know that you could to this without going to the BIOS.
There should be an FPS increase for everyone since the files get their own designated space on the front of the partition, resulting in that higher performance and stability -
One word of caution: although partition utilities like this are designed to resize partitions without damaging the contents, you should always back up any important data before attempting something like this.
That being said, simply having the game on another partition will not necessarily speed up the game. -

but hey, it worked for me without the need to back up my data -

just try it out, it's easy once you do it . it works well on older computers, but i'm not sure about today's gaming rigs[MOD]Greycloak wrote: »One word of caution: although partition utilities like this are designed to resize partitions without damaging the contents, you should always back up any important data before attempting something like this.

what he said . but hey, i haven't had any problems with this program -

C Drive has 37.2GB and 3.4GB free space.
D Drive has 37.2GB and 23.5GB free space.
Would you recommend I do this?
Also, would crossfire work faster if it was in the D Drive?
If that D drive is a second physical drive you might be better served by putting your virtual memory on that drive instead of C. This won't make a difference if its just another partition on the same drive. -
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Memory: 1GB RAM
Hard Drive: 16.2 GB (left available)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420
BEST BELIEVE I'M GOING TO TRY THIS SH1T! [especially with all the good feedback!]
If this works, I DON'T EVEN KNOW. HOOOOOOOLYYYYYYYY SHINOOOOLLAAAAAA! -
The point of partitioning is to use the free space on your regular drive to make another one. I'm not really sure how it helps raises fps, but it worked for me so, hey!
oh hai der.
@thread
Increased by 5fps (Win7)
Increased by 0fps (WinXP)
And yeah, I did a dualboot. -
I have 2 great computers. I doubted the FPS increase...so:
I've taken an older computer I had hanging around, here's the quick specs:
CPU: Pentium4 2.4 -> Over Clocked to 2.8 GHz
RAM: 2 GB
HD: 32 GB
GPU: 7600
After a 30min set up I ran Cross Fire. Avg 30-45 FPS on two different maps.
Once I had this base line, I then fallowed your steps to repartition my C Drive. I set about 4 GBs to a D Drive.
After rebooting my system I opened back up Cross Fire. Given the same two maps I noticed a small, like you said, steady 10 FPS increase.
I then installed Game Booster to add in on any extra I might get out of it.
With Game Booster and a new partition Ive noticed a decent increase of 15-20 FPS.
Not a bad idea...STICKY!!!
But to put this to the test...I have an old laptop that I will check this out on.
As well as my main computer: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1404196
Core2DuoOC
Edited Note: I have always used Smart DeFrag V1.5, best free one ever. -
-1st attempt after Applying Changes: BSOD
-Turned comp. back on, changes applied fine
-Defragged with smart frag (I think I'm on a 32-bit, so I avoided Puran Defrag)
-Ran CF in a 8v6/8v8 Was getting 30-40 more often. My fps was still constantly changing since I have an old pc, but it was staying higher for a longer time. Smoke/Spray (yes, spraying guns in front of me srsly drops my fps)/People winning guns/People joining: all still made my FPS drop down to around 19 or lower; but in general, my fps stayed around 30-40 most of the time instead of 20-30.
-I'm expecting it to help much more in a 5v5 where I'd normally get anywhere from 15-50; 25-35 ALWAYS CHANGING on average. Although it'll still keep changing, with it being higher on average, it should be mighty dericious.
Thanks! -
