Ping --> internet speed?

no it depends on how close you live to the servers(all the low pingers, 9 8 7 even 3!!!!!!!) live in canada where alpha thru beta are, but west coast server is on west coast of USA so if you live in LA you have very good ping, if i am not mistaken(which im pretty sure im not)

Actually, ping partially depends on internet speed as well. I live in Vancouver, and used to have Shaw for my internet. At that time, I had about 60 ping.
However, right now I'm getting about 90 ping because I changed my internet provider to Telus, which is slower than Shaw.
When I had both internet hooked up for a few days before I discontinued services from Shaw, I tried switching it back and forth the lines, and the pings actually changed. -
Ping is the transfer of packets between the server and you're computer. The biggest impact that ping has on a user is distance but as a user mentioned if you have a good ISP and a good plan you're Ping will be slightly better. And it is measured in Milliseconds for example
My avg Ping is 10
If I was playing with someone with 100 ping I see him 90 milliseconds faster. Its not a big difference until you hit over the 200 ping range then ping had a major impact on game play. -
Ok since we're all talking about ping here i would like to ask a question.
My current ping is around 110, while my friend who lives a few blocks away has a ping of 80-90. I know i have a faster internet because it takes him 4 Hours to download a movie and it only takes me 30 minutes to download that same exact movie. Can anybody tell me why his ping is lower than mine? -

It's definitely not a hardware issue. Im running:
-AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor
-2 GB Ram
-Nvidia 8600GT
With that i can run CoD: WaW with full specs. My friends can barely run CoD on minimum. -
Lol, not to brag or sound like an a__hole, but im better than probably 80% of the players in this game. So if what your saying was true then i'd have like 20 ping. Sigh... too bad it doesn't work like that.

Im not talking about video card/Ram which had nothing to do with ping.... More about the network card.... -

Since they touched upon the NC card, i can also bring up the issue of routing. Different isp's have paths and cables they use to send data to different people. While two houses could live together, the path that the date travels to could be different. So, house a could travel with only two hops, while b could have 10 hops, both leading to the same data.
As for the speed of your connection, you wont see drastic change from most commercial connections if you have around a 7-10mb connection. Now, if you upgrade to a 30-60ish mb connection, thats different. -
Uhm, how could i check what my network card is?
