FPS Guide.

Alright, I have been seeing a lot of qeustions about FPS. How to make it better, why its so low, what steps can I take to fix it.
Well, I thoguht I would make a little something for everyone to benefit from. Please do not flame/troll, as I may not be a profesional at computer tech, but I know more than enough to build my own PC from scratch. Also, I know the way I explain things may not be how a professional would, but as long as you can understand, I'll be ok with it. If you have any questions just PM me.

Introduction
Name: Sober
Age: 17
Years played: Over a year now
Computer tech skills: Almost a computer technicians status
Favorite mode: SnD
My Rig: an Intel dual Core 2.8 Ghz processor with an ATI X300. simple logitech laser mouse (wired) and steelseries Z-board.
Other: Ever since I was little I have been taking things apart and putting them back together. Took my first computer apart when I was twelve, took my like 3-4 months to get it back together. Uhm, that's about it, so now you know a little bit about me, lets get started.

Definition of FPS
Well, if you want to get into details. Theres two definitions to this. (That pertain to CF)
First Person Shooter and Frames Per Second (Which is what we will be discussing)
Frames Per second is how many frames your computer is generating per second. The eye of a human can only see 60 Frames Per Second. So we don't really notice anything weird when we play unless the FPS rate hits under 60. It is easily spotted when you have anythings under 40.

More Details
So now you know what FPS means and what it does. Now to get into a little more details on how it performs. The higher the quality, the more work your video card and processor work. The lower the graphics the less it works. So in other words, the higher your settings for your graphics are in-game the lower your FPS rate, (unless you have the newer video cards) and the the lower the settings the higher your FPS.

What affects your "FPS" rate?
There are a bunch load of things. As I mentioned before, the graphic settings play a part. Whats happening in-game also can give a big blow to your FPS. Such as, smokes, nades, ton of firing, someone spamming chat. But your computer specs play the main role. RAM: Pretty much is like the officer that stands in the middle of the road and directs traffic. The more RAM the better, some people would say. Although I have 1GB of RAM and I hold out fine. Your processor: Some people may not know the difference between a single/dual/triple/quad core processors. The way I was told, its like a kitchen sink. Each drain in the sink represents a core on the processor. The more cores the better. Graphics card: This is what displays your desktop and your game, web browser, and so fourth. Some cards are meant for gaming, some are meant just for your casual media playing or web browsing. I won't go into details with video cards. If you have a question about it just PM me.

FAQ's?
Q:How can I raise my FPS rate?
A:There are three ways you can do this. One of which I do NOT recommend unless you knowwhat your getting into.
1: Change your game settings, set them lower.
2: Buy a new computer or just upgrade certain parts you think needs the upgrade.
3: Bio settings. If you know what you're doing and you know how to do it, good. But to the average user, I do NOT recommend this. People use this to overclock their processor, video cards, and RAM. Causing the computer to work harder and shortens the life expectancy of your computer unless taken care of more thoughrly.
4: (I know I said 3 but I never used this)Gamebooster is suppose to work, althoguh I have heard it barely helps, while others say it helps a lot. I would say try it out and see. But do not recommend it.

Q: If the human eye can only see 60 FPS why would I need a computer that can give me more?
A: Its simple really, the more FPS your computer can generate the more your computer can take when there's so much going on. Like people spamming chat. When peopel spam chat, I lag, but if your computer can get more than 140 FPS I would assume you would have no problems. So the more the better.

Q: I have a quad core and my FPS is low. why?
A: Its possible that your Ghz for each core is set too low. Go to Bios if you wish, but I recommend going to a computer technician on doing this for you to guarentee that you won't mess up.
Sorry, I couldn't come up with more.

So thats guide, I hope this works for those who need it.
As I have said before, have any problems or qwuestions feel free to PM me on the forums. Or you can send me an E-mail (but I may accidently delete it so forums would be best) with the MSN on the left under my name.

  • TL:DR

For CF, the higher SINGLE core rate, the better the frames will be

    Ergo

2.1 quad core is slower then a 2.6 dual core

    Apples

All other games, listen to sober
  • For FAQ Question 1, I would recommend GameBooster

Well, this wasn't just for CF. But yes, as Delaco said, CF is VERY dependant on your cores. The higher the better.

    Doesn't matter, anyways, good guide.
I couldn't say "Sticky" yet, not long enough, but I do see you put effort into this.

Lul??? You should be hitting 90 FPS, probably more. That might be a problem with your OS. Try installing a fresh Win7 copy.

Well...i had xp now i have vista 64 bit
  • I overclocked my e5300 to 3.8Ghz from 2.7Ghz. The fps went up by double digits, Crossfire = CPU optimized.
    3.76GHz from 3.2 :/

Went saw difference by upto 50 FPS. Running right now at 3.6GHz, just for safety, I r only 16, cant afford another one ;)

It sounds as if you have a program running that is very CPU dependant. Like Spybot search and destroy. Or even norton, doing a deep scan.
Also, I would like to add, that constantly turning your computer on and off harms your pc hardware. The constant heat up and cool down, and non-moving to moving parts is really harsh.

I recommend to everyone, that you always leave your computer running, and only restart it from time to time. Like once a week, or maybe even once every two weeks. Unless you're using a desktop. And thanks to those who noticed I put some time into this guide.

I didn't put it into the guide sections because it wasn't completely a guide, it was more of an information brochure with some hints and tips. Which is why I put it in barracks. And I typed everything up in 10 minutes which is why there are so many spelling errors, and other stuff.

    Thanks a ton guys,
    Sober
EDIT: If anyone wants to throw something at me for a guide to make, I'll be more than happy to do so. I'm always willing to learn something new if I don't know about it. So if you have an idea for me, toss it my way. ;)
  • Great guide. But i thought people knew what FPS was by now...
  • Great guide. But i thought people knew what FPS was by now...

Its not that they didn't know. Its that not everyone here knows how to get better FPS. When I made this thread, I made it so that, it was as if someone had walked up to me and asked me what FPS was, how it works, how to make it better, and so on. You can't expect everyone knows. I know people my age and adults that don't even know what FPS is.

LOL..funny is that in science they like to use specific vocabulary ..."a continuos flow of light" is a constant number of frames ..god ur stupid..
Secondly I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS play with 20 FPS and I NEVER LAGG thank god :)..
I also have another pc where i hit 120 fps and they're both the same gameplay ..
ALSO every eye has some number for frames per second in order to see clearly and i said "~20" "~" "~" means the average is 20..
And to sum up with....You sir cant argue with my knowledge as i have learned this stuff at school and not read it off the internet.AND PLEASE take note that wikipedia is written by people like me and you and because they're like you ..The information can we wrong.. :)

gtfo. Make a lie that is somewhat believable.

I and many others have played with 20 fps before, and have found it unbearable. Try shooting your deagle 7 times and have only 3 bullets come out.

lol? 20 FPS is HORRIBLE. I'm sorry if I insulted your "knowledge". What do you not get about "a continuous flow of light"? That means that your eyes see an unlimited amount of FPS for you gamers who play so much crossfire that they drop out of school. Have you ever heard of someone who has an eye that sees at "5 fps" or "7 fps"? It's called being blind.

A: Its possible that your Ghz for each core is set too low. Go to Bios if you wish, but I recommend going to a computer technician on doing this for you to guarentee that you won't mess up.
Sorry, I couldn't come up with more.

    Outro
