LAN Question

With the hint of CF LANs coming in 2014, what will be the factor the might prevent you from going to the LAN?

School? Work? Money? Family? Distance? Time?

When you say distance, does that mean the cost to travel that far?

no, just the fact that you will get 1/2 as many people if you put it on the east/west coast rather than central.

But what I am saying is that, IF they had the funds to travel across the country, would they?

If its across the country I would need to fly, unless its on a weekend that I dont have school on a monday/friday
  • going to a lan for a dead game and playing against 3-4 teams

The only reason you're pushing for a lan in central u.s is so your 10 pound virgin ass doesn't have to spend a dime in traveling. Its more than obvious that having a lan on either the east, or west coast would be a better option.
  • Pretty much every Lan has been based central or East coast, So distance and money for virtually every west coast player in the game.
  • Chicago / Dallas / Toronto are the best 3 locations, if you want a good balance of USA / CA teams. Best overall would be Chicago.

    What people dont want:
    BYOC Lans
    Poor Location
Bad Prizes (If you want a good turnout, FG LAN prizes wont cut it)

    What you need to do:
Plan the event more thoroughly if you are hosting it yourself again
Prevent things such as the 3-4 hr delay in start time FG LAN had
Slightly higher entrance fee to elevate the prize pool
Discounted hotel or other sleep space for far traveling participants
Ability to Pre-Register / Pay Ahead of time
    On site Casters this time
Dont ask the community to donate to the prize pool, we play to win prizes, putting up a prize isn't something you ask the participants to do.

Overall just be more prepared this time, a lot of things for FG LAN were done way too last minute, and should have been done ahead of time. You have good intentions, just not always the best approach, good luck hosting future lans.

I have already spent ~$900 traveling fees to go to a LAN, so you're obviously wrong. I'd be down to go to Toronto again, or East/West coast, however it would be pointless to go to a coast LAN like NC and have 70 ping peek advantage. Having a LAN on either coast is also a FAR worse option than central because you won't get as many players, and there will be ping issues.

uh, fg lan prizes were actually very good considering it was a community lan...

    yeah what he said
  • What you need to do is find an area where a LAN would be suitable for West coast, Central, and East coast, and take a poll.

    New York, Chicago, Toronto, Dallas
  • School - I can't miss any days of school it will bring me way behind on work.

    Distance - Distance = travel=money=no no

Time - Weekend or on a holiday or again school problems ^

    CALIFORNIA PLEASE ;P

This pretty much sums it up, just gonna add some things since not sure of some things, make sure there is a nearby LAN center, and discounted hotels would make more people able to go. I prefer central US for a LAN but possibly Toronto again would be nice :)

Yeah I was really happy with the outcome of FG LAN
  • myanswer

Money and School. Distance I guess would sum it up.
-would try my best though to make it to any lan.
I live in the west coast... in Nevada.

I see exactly what you're talking about.

Plan the event more thoroughly if you are hosting it yourself again

I hope to never have to plan a LAN by myself again.

Prevent things such as the 3-4 hr delay in start time FG LAN had

Even after all of the paper work was done, they screw us over by charging us for 2 people to watch us setup the night before. It was a holiday so that was like double OT.

Slightly higher entrance fee to elevate the prize pool

YES YES YES. It was $10 to $20 per person but it should have been alot higher.

Discounted hotel or other sleep space for far traveling participants

Rooms were $130+ night, had it discounted down to $99/night.

Ability to Pre-Register / Pay Ahead of time

    Agreed

    On site Casters this time

Do to the venue we had, we couldnt have casters, otherwise they might give out a players location.

Dont ask the community to donate to the prize pool, we play to win prizes, putting up a prize isn't something you ask the participants to do.

Not the best thing to do, but it has been done before and turned out great.

I want to make it to be as fair as possible for everyone. I want as many people as possible to attend, even if they live in the West, East Coast or Canada.

Im currently working on ways to help players and teams get extra money so they can go to the LANs.

I didnt say it was terrible, but if you want to appeal to people who have to pay to travel there, 500 a person isnt worth it for a LAN where you have to pay more than that to get there. For a first community LAN the prize was decent however if they want more USA teams to go to Toronto, they need at least a 5k first prize to make it worth while for players from teams like Carbon who live in the midwest and west United States.

Either that or choose a more centralized location. My vote is for Chicago.

WUN and Vemma are not realistic ways for earning funding. Unless by "currently working" you mean gaining interest from sponsors for the purpose of elevating CF in the eyes of bigger sponsors and supporting teams in getting better sponsors.

If you are going to throw WUN and Vemma at teams, you might as well forget it now and save yourself some time.

That $500 donations says otherwise. All thanks to WUN. Just don't start complaining when you or your team can't make it to a LAN due to funding.

You personally can waste all of the time you want on WUN and donate it to teams and the community. Just dont try to push things like WUN and Vemma onto the CF community.

    + 1

Then I shouldn't hear no one complain about the expense of traveling.

    Oh no!

I don't have the funds to go to a LAN.

However, I don't want to be caught in a pyramid scheme!

    What should I do?!
