It was not our intention.
We will work out some events to compensate players for sure. However we're still in panic mode trying to make sure everything else works first.
(one thing at a time)
We are definitely sorry for the troubles this has caused. -

Unfortunately whether we said 20 minutes or 20 hours, it wouldn't stop people from hammering the login button every few seconds to try and get in! No one can be blamed for that.
Here is what happened:
The patch was issued, the patch itself is a fairly simple fix. However upon applying it to the live server (patches get tested on a separate internal server) there was an error with a file.
The file itself was not going through the check process. The classic, "File is Changed" type error. The problem is we cannot spend 5 hours with the servers down to determine what the problem is. We need to go back to how the client file was updated and look at what the problem was from QA to Live.
So we have reverted the patch to the previous version and opened the servers. Everything is fine now until we figure out what the problem is and issue the patch again.
However, those who were hammering the button in between might have downloaded that patch before we opened up the rest of the game (the servers go up so we can test before the login server gets opened for the public). In that time the game probably automatically tried to download the update, but now it's a different version from what has been reverted.
In order to revert your version you have to download the previous version and start fresh.
For those wondering how to prevent the long download times. They can simply keep a version of the game installer on their Hard Drive. The game may need to "patch" but at least the main portion of the files are already contained in that file. -

But. It is their fault for not waiting patiently for you to announce. -

While I appreciate your sentiment, it's impossible to blame anyone for something like that!
Also, as mentioned there are a ton of people who don't check the forums. We give the extra details here for you guys to join in discussions on and be a part of. But many people don't have that level of interaction.
They just see the server go down and don't understand we're updating it and then try to connect again and again and again until it comes back up.
Even for fully scheduled maintenance with large content updates where the server is down for 2 hours!
