oh, i just need to be able to run some finance/accounting and photoshop, my sister has it on her macbook pro, it looks very clean and all just never checked into it, but i'm downloading it now.
if you want to use photoshop then i would stay away from it because it can't run photoshop
there's also a learning curve -

Well i was going to put it on my dads computer since all he does is surf the web and i don't necessarily like driving to his house every time he gets a message saying something about the anti virus, the guy absolutely knows nothing about computers which is sad because he works with some of the most high tech stuff. Which brings me to my next question, no anti virus or anything? and maintenance is easy? -

Yea, you don't need an anti-virus program. It's pretty straight-forward and easy, but once you get into configuring applications and being more technical, it can get a little tricky (in the sense that it is very much different than what you are used to with Windows) -

oh okay, thanks. -

Chances are windows 7 would be terrible for you, and even if you did get it you would have to disable most of the graphical features that make windows 7 look decent.
Not trying to XP fag here but in reality you would be better off taking the safe route. -
So will disabling programs and changing theme to classic match the performance of XP?
It won't, but it will get close to it.
Don't install W7 Ultimate, just don't.tastylime25g wrote: »just an internet browser and a command console
jk, runs most of the mainstream programs on windows + it has it's own linux-based open source programs (that are free and better than anything on windows)
That's an utter lie. The programs that come to my mind that can't run on Linux are:
Microsoft Office
Xfire
FRAPS
iTunes
Winamp
etc...
You will find similar programs to these that are available for Linux, but won't be able to do exactly the same as the ones named above.oh, i just need to be able to run some finance/accounting and photoshop, my sister has it on her macbook pro, it looks very clean and all just never checked into it, but i'm downloading it now.
Linux Mint is one of the most user friendly Linux distros out there (Linux Ubuntu being the #1 in this category, however I didn't like the 11.10 version (buggy and I found the interface rather annoying), I'm going back to the 10.10 version) According to what I've read so far about this distro, this is the one that "feels the same" as windows, in other words, the familiarization term is shortened a lot. I haven't tried this distro yet, but I'm planning to, I will download it today and install it on my laptop, and if you are willing to wait, I can comeback here and tell you what I think about it. But it you want to try it out, here's the website:
http://www.linuxmint.com/
If you go to that website, you will find 3 versions of Linux Mint, the one I was talking about is Linux Mint 12, the KDE and Debian versions are a little bit more complex to my understanding. -

I decided on XP Professional already.
But just wondering, which 7 edition cuts down all the useless programs ultimate has while still keeping some of the msot usefull? -

I can't understand your doubts.
Vista takes way MORE resources than 7 (7 was greatly improved in terms of performance). Therefore if your computer can run Vista, it WILL run 7 without any trouble.
Also, when you downgrade your system you cannot save the files unless you back them up. If you upgrade from vista to 7 you'll be asked if you want to keep the files.
Go for 7. -

I'd say the Home Premium version.I can't understand your doubts.

You do know he only has 1 Gb RAM right? -
Finally got XP and I'm glad I got it.
It has all I need and it has more space, not clustered, and I can finally play CF again.
I stopped playing CF because with vista load times were huge(especially in the 1st game of the day), but now, load times are fast and I don't get lag at the beginning on games.
Now to see if I can find the good side of the CF community to play with(doubt it). -
