Do mousepads make a difference to gameplay?

Currently I am not using a mousepad to play Cross Fire, just wondering whether it is worth the time to go out and grab one? If I you guys think it makes a difference i'm probably going to get a good old Razer mousepad

Basically if your mouse surface provides enough reference points for the mouse to detect motion consistently, then you should be good. I had a mousepad from the University of Michigan that worked great with a ball mouse, but it had a Maize and Blue splash that confused the hell out of my optical mouse.
