You can be strong. You can be weak.
It doesn't matter, no one can have the effect to somehow fight depression off. That is if you have no help no nothing.
People do it for many reasons, a main one is depression and well if your not getting help etc. The only person you can turn to is the thing that will stop you from living.
Why?
Because depression is a problem, it is a illness a lot of people have it.
And people need others to help them to over come it and maybe become happy and such. Saying only for the weak is ignorant in some ways.

Anyways it depends, some people do it because there attention wh0res and are mentally weak. But it depends on the situation.

But overall suicide isn't the best idea, it's probably the worst idea.
But if your depressed and all, you eventually don't care what happens therefor most of them do not want to live. It's how it is.
