No bullet sounds or footstep problem fix! read this for a solution :)
After seaching through these forums, and yahoo ansewrs i finally figured it out.
first, (got this idea from someone in the crossfire forums, iam so sorry i forget your name because it was what you said that helped me out the most)
Go to control panel, pick sounds, audio and speech devices,
Nexed go to sounds and audio devices,
now if the name of your sound card doesint come up on that first tab and instead says "no audio devices detected" you got your problem right there.
The nexed step to fixing this problem is simple
Go back to control panel and select system and then click on the hardware tab and go to device manager.
nexed look for your audio card on the list, and uninstall it! dont be scared about uninstalling, you dont need the cd for reinstall and best part is it installs by itself.
so once you got it uninstalled, REBOOT! :P
now, open up crossfire and enjoy the sounds!!!!!! =]]
read!! ---> dont think that just because you hear sounds from other games this solution wont work, i was playing many other games while this problem was active and still was able to hear the sound effects from them no problem, only seemed to effect crossfire. iam not sure why, but the important thing is that its fixed :P

edit: btw, afterwords it would be a good idea to do a virus scan to make sure it doesint happen again -
Nice post. Although it's not guaranteed to solve everyones problem I'm sure it will help some.
I just wanted to add a couple of things
If you are running Windows 7 the navigation to device manager is slightly different. You can click the Start button, type in device and you will see Device Manager near the top of the list which you can click to open.
Also, if using a specific sound card which windows does not natively support, when uninstalling the sound device it may ask whether you want to delete the driver software. Select no for this otherwise you will have to install the sound driver again after rebooting.
Finally, there may be an occasion where the sound device is not listed and may appear as an unknown or other device. In that case you will need to install the sound drivers assuming you know what it should be.
If you are not sure what it is you need to uninstall, the sound card device will be something like realtek, sigmatel, sound blaster (do they still make those?), high definition audio. -
