My headset is awesome for what you're looking for.
Plantronic Gamecom 777.
Thats exactly what I have.... I love em. They are rather big but the ear pieces fit over your ears. The sound quality of the dolby 5.1 is pretty good. The mic tucks away very nicely as well. Got mine for $100
Comfort: 9/10
Style: 6/10
Quality: 7/10
Overall: 8/10 -

I have both. The first is my old pair, and the second one I just got for my birthday.

Auditechnica AD700 ~$80
and
Zalman ZM-1 Clip on Mic ~$5
The AD700s have one of sound stages for gaming under $150.
You won't find anything better.
Completely agreed. For 80$ you get the headphones with the widest soundstage under 500$.
Pair that with a Zalman clip on and you have a light big and confortable headset. Performs better than most headsets on the market under 300$. It just won't give you that PZAZZ of other more dynamic and bassy headphones.
If the AD700 isn't your liking because of it's dull sound. You should try the Beyerdynamic DT880s. You can get them for 200$ and they have puchier tighter base and a more dominant mids. Better for overall gaming experience but not much more useful for competitive gaming.
Danm, mayB I should make a Headset guide thread...

YE, Beyers know how to make headphones. I owne their DT48s, the old 1s iunno if uve heard of em. Very unique sounding headphones. ILOVE them! But DT880s are best headphones overall for the "gaming experience" under I'd say 700$ lol -
under $200? hmm

This.you won't find anything better. If you find the ad700 ugly, I would recommend some sennheiser hd555 or hd 590.
If you want something more recent I heard good things about the corsairs hs1.
