Can people really change?

Yes they can, but it takes time, and it also depends on the person's will to change.
This ^ answers pretty much all of it, people can change without traumas with their will to change, wich is the only way to change without a trauma.
But, as the culture makes us think that the change is a bad thing, most of the people renegate the change at all costs, so they keep pressing on the same paradigm... -
Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending
Changing is a decision alone made by you. ANYONE can change and be someone different/do things differently than in the past. Will there always be a part of that old person in you? Of course. But it doesn't have to be the governing part of your life. -

it's like turning a book's page, once your turn it, it'll still make part of the book, but you won't see it... -
I agree with you, but it would take allot of determination to do so.
For me I find it almost impossible to change.
Like he said your ability to change is only limited by your will to change. If you're not willing to change, then you're going to have a hard time changing. Confusing yet?

I totally agree with this random guy i quoted.[MOD]Polleus wrote: »Like he said your ability to change is only limited by your will to change. If you're not willing to change, then you're going to have a hard time changing. Confusing yet?
But people also change all the time even if they don't want to. You see and learn new things all the time and even if you don't realize it. You are not the same as you were yesterday.
So the answer to the question is easy. Yes. People can change. And not only they can. But they will. -

People can change. It's the fact of whether they can accept the change mentally.
Developing and Changing are totally different, People CAN change if they really do try.
change:
Normal kid+internet=troll
Develop:
normal kid+guitar lessons=rock star

It's really more complex than that, you cannot really change what you are, your inner traits.
But with good will and patience, you can make some of your traits less visible and make other ones shine. It won't change who you are but will totally make you a better person, what people shall perceive of you.
But change? Nah, people don't change. -

Me too, I have changed even my parents say so, I used to be everyone's doormat. Now people are lucky if they get within 10 yards so to speak. -

Yes we can "change". I'll spare you my lectures on psychology.
http://www.suite101.com/content/making-personality-changes-a38196University of California (Berkeley) researchers Sanjay Srivastava and Oliver P John found that not only do personality traits change over time – personality traits change more in adulthood than in childhood.
Interesting arguments to your claims
I guess it depends on who's looking at the two topics and who is doing the researching. Personally, I do believe one can change traits on a psychological level, but hardly anyone ever does because of the extreme amount of perseverance and work involved. It's easier just to "put on a mask" and act different than it is to really BE different. -

All related to hormones. Explains why men become less "aggressive" as they grow older, testosterone levels tend to diminish.
But that's just technical, I think the right approach is maturity and experience can help you develop into a better person. I just don't like the "change" word, it's not like someone who is naturally calm and reserved (without due to traumatic events) can suddenly become loud and extroverted (without drug or alcohol inhibition). -

Haha, I know what you mean
Just stirring the pot a little. -

While that's the opinion of your's, I don't disagree, but I also don't agree.
Life experience is quite a toll, and well, people can change, while your genetics do choose somethings for you like aggressiveness, it doesn't mean that's it, that's who you are.
I wouldn't consider someone who was killing people at the age of ten, and then becoming a doctor or something similar being a development. Things like that do happen.
Some things you just learn from life, who you become won't be just based on genetics, and who you started out could be totally different.
Who you are comes from a multitude of things, and at times like this, I really just disagree with what scientists come up with sometimes because what we know right now, could change by learning one new thing tomorrow.
Perception of people changes depending on how you act, but perception doesn't mean the person change, it's the person that is receiving the perception that changed.
My opinion, is we both develop and change. Everyone develops, but just not everyone has the will to change.
