Sadly we can't do much more then hope they want to loose the only major source of profits they get from the game when it comes to ZP, I.E the exclusivity of the item in hand. The exchange system would be quite unbalanced from a business perspective, especially for a free game. So economically they'd have to see a higher rate with a proportional long term increase to take something such as an exchange market into account for the happiness of their customers (ZP investment) and the more or less freebie players (GP, typically limited).
For right now without having a look at their financial's and based off of the mere fact that ZP users are one of their major sources of income this won't happen without an influx of players with a higher positive long term rate of change (resulting typically in a minor equivalent increase of ZP users but with diminishing returns taken into account this could take quite a bit of time until the game reaches a popularity level equivalent to say, Guild Wars). That's one possibility where this would become economically possible for them to consider. I haven't seen the growth rate models of their player base to know, but I don't think CF is growing that fast.;)
Who knows, they might have a limited system in the meantime, utilizing GP as a base of the transaction to help buffer the ZP loss.
