ATTN: CSN Placement Tournament Information

CSN will be doing things a little differently when it comes to division placement in the Opening Placement Tournaments. Due to this system being a tournament, having the top 16 teams move into the Select Division would be unfair. What if a good team was knocked out first round by a better one? What if a mediocre team made it to the final rounds off of forfeit wins or easy brackets? Things like this could make the division placements incorrect.

During this tournament, your Open/Select division selection will be based on your performance during the games you play, not the final standings. This means that a team that does well in the first round against the tournament winner, but gets knocked out, still has a chance of moving on to the Select division.

Now, don't worry about the flawed choices of humans. This is an equation based process, meaning that no human bias or opinion was placed into this.

It's a somewhat complicated process, so I won't go into it too deeply here. However, I will say that it works by taking the result of a game between two teams, and comparing it with results from as many other games are needed, to apply a numerical ranking to each team. At the end of the tournament, not only will you be able to see how far you made it in the tournament, but also what your final rank was.

Don't worry, if you get placed 3rd in the tournament but your ranking shows you as 4th or 5th, you'll still keep your status and prizes as the 3rd place competitor. This system will ONLY be used for determining the most accurate division placements for each team.

If you have any brief questions about this, please feel free to post in the thread. If you have any in-depth questions, please xFire: colossalkoala, you will receive a much better response.

  • I'm sure this system has some merit to it but starting out your 1st season with multiple divisions can be the death of your league. Look at wogl for example, roughly 40% of their matches were played, if they had decided to create 2 divisions prior to that it would have been even worse.

Generally a league wants to have a first season with only one division, this gives teams an entire season to prove themselves rather than one short tournament where they might lose 2nd round purely because it was a bad map for them or 1-2 of their starters couldn't make it.

If we get lower than a 2-league manageable amount of team, I have no doubt that we'll be running only 1 league. However, that's all in the future. The Adam would like to get all leagues going ASAP, and through this formula we will be able to emulate an entire league's play for placement.

This makes placement as accurate as possible. Unfortunately a placement league at this time isn't an option, however this will be MUCH more accurate than what a placement tournament would normally be.

sounds good to me. as long as you guys will have prizes in future leagues LPK will be playing and winning them.
  • Sounds good, but to make it easier and a lower chance of the 2 best teams playing each other in the first round, you could always look at the wogl-o, wogl-p results and go from there, i know its not the same league and not ALL the teams participated, but it could still give you a good idea how to place the brackets so that you dont get 2 good teams playing each other in the first round or a team that has basically a clear path to the semi finals.

    Just a suggestion.

Brackets WILL be done randomly, this way there are no bias issues. And no worries about if a team plays another great team first round. This tournament is really for the placement of teams in leagues, so all issues with that should be taken care of.

In the end whichever team wants it will win the tournament, if two great teams face off in the first round, the one who has a better chance of winning will move on.

Also, if you have issues with teams getting the credit they don't deserve, either by making it to the finals or by getting knocked out first round, the ranking list will be posted publicly at the end of the tournament, so you will be able to see who's better than who.

Okay that sounds good, but wouldn't you want to see an interesting finals match, instead of the finals match being in the first round? ;)

Definitely. However, I'd prefer a schedule free of bias. Bias is typically the downfall of things :P

Haha, you know more about it than me, just giving suggestions. Im sure the finals will be interesting no matter what.

no im good to go buddy
  • Why not just have a round robin style of play with no teams being eliminated.
Then once the 16 select teams have been chosen there are the elimination brackets to determine an absolute winner.
