Whats the point of breaking guns?

I dont get it, people say that breaking guns can get you more GP. But i dont get that, i broke my M16 but i didnt get any gp.

So can someone explain how breaking guns gets you more gp.

If you don't repair weapons..you get GP from not repairing it.
