Discord opinions/discussion

**if you don't want to read toxicity then better skip this thread (well not very much, just a bit)**

Hi.

As someone who use forums for many years,I have to say it really makes me sad to see how dead the forums are these days, because I really liked to communicate with others and share experiences.I thought "maybe everyone hiding on that discord thing".So I download discord yesterday and uninstalled it instantly in the same day (7-8 hours after it)

I was wondering what's your "opinions" over that thing called CF discord and discord in general

I'll start:as I said I downloaded this thing discord yesterday for check where everyone hiding and I uninstall it after 7-8 hours, yes the discord unlike forums is pretty much alive, but after reading what's going on there I decided to not even say hello, the posts there are mostly a spam, some one write "by mistake" and the other guy replied "ur a mistake" & or someone write "moe still alive" and the other guy replied "yea, sadly".As I said mostly people only sarcastic to each other or try make others feel bad.About the GM's conductship there, from what I see, they can't really see people "thinking" or "use logic" there and don't want people to have "big talks",they prefer see people spam bad jokes, they don't need people with lots of experience and what to contribute to "voice their opinions" , they rather prefer see kids spam ducks or spongebob pictures.people are entitled to their opinions, they can't just like in a dictatorship to threaten with mutes everyone who want to be a just a little bit more serious than post unicorns. About discord in general and not CF,I also tried to voice chat with my friends, and see how that thing work.We had lots of bugs, somewhy when we talked it worked just ok,sometimes voice lags but it worked, but when we get into the game started our mics stopped work at all until the game end(it's like it doesn't allow to talk while in-game or something),so we lost out ranked match and all said lots of lovely words in Russian and went back to teamspeak.

Ok ur turn </3

  • Unfortunately, you are right. Fourm is much better than discord, but at the end no one was writing anything on it and most of players start using discord, and some times you can see silly conversation/subject in discord.
I hope forum be like before with GM and players support.
  • +1. one time i try started important theme, but children kill this his spam

I actually thought it must only be me.

About discord in general i find it great besides it not having advanced permissions system like teamspeak 3.

And about cf discord, Its heavily censored, and seems to be targeted at younger audiences.
Any complaints about cheaters/scripters gets you insta muted or banned.
Any topics about anything controversial gets your messages deleted and muted/banned.

The forum is mostly dead, but i still prefer it over the discord server that is too heavily moderated in my opinion, so having been banned and muted countless times I just dont see myself using it other than reading other player's bug reports, update progress or for occasional current technical issues awareness.
  • The discussion in a forum is asynchronous, and Discord is synchronous in theory and somehow, but both are linked to CrossFire West.

Personally, I prefer this forum. I would not say I like Discord. However, I am using it because by using the Discord it keeps me updated with recent information, in real-time, and in everything that's happening in the CFWest community (new bugs and glitches, reports about something related to CF; GM's messages about issues and events, also about CF questions and AMA, etc.), and that's something that definitely doesn't happen here on the forum.

I agree with you. It's true, and Discord seems like a mini dictatorship. We know that anything that is clearly intolerable is not allowed on any server. It is normal and understandable, but if you are new to Discord, you might run into trouble at any minute since you don't know what's right or not (what behaviors are okay and not okay, except for the rules described in Discord). Because of the foregoing or the above mentioned, you might get a warning, or a muted so long as you break one of the invisible rules.

I.e., there are no specific rules or a detailed list, which in other words, what a user can or cannot do in all the Discord. It would be great if there were an updated list (rules) of what you can or cannot do. The behavior that a GM expects from a user on the server (Rules and conduct). Yes, some messages are also pinned in each channel's descriptions, but that is not all.

Example: You can't share a redeem code with other users (especially from newsletters). You can't tag the Game Master role, except for an emergency (that's why we see it often). And those things aren't in the server rules. And I guess some stringent forum rules are being enforced on Discord.

In CF Discord, users look like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. An analogy of the Oompa Loompa (Willy Wonka): they all follow the same current/pattern, wear and use the same thing, imitate the same thing, and move the same way in the server (I say this with no intention of offending anyone).
  • I tried the Discord too, i joined Cf Discord to want to report a Bug Ingame, so i marked Admins, then i got over 1 Week Mute, as reason "Dont mark Admin Role its against the Rules", so i checked the Rules on the Discord Server and there was no Rule written down that says you shouldnt mark Admin Role, and i was just trying to make to look over a Bug Ingame, but they didnt care at all, they cant even set discord up right since when it shouldnt be allowed to mark admin role on DC they can put the Settings so that it cant be marked, and even when they dont understand how the settings works, they could just do Write that Rule down, and not be only for users that are since Start of CF Discord there and knowing that.

Since then i never touched CF Discord again, treating me like cr*p for a rule that was in their minds and was never written down there, and continued to let me muted even i just wanted to highlight their attention to a bug, so i left and wont touch it again, even when Dark Tower and Void still are bugged as hell, you dont get any Drops from Dark Tower, and even Dark Tower shop dont Function anymore, it takes your Dark Crystals away when you buy something but you get nothing, and in Dark Tower Final Stage the Reaper Attack Pattern is above the players Bosses, so after every "Round house" attack from the reaper you dont see yourself running arround, but i dont care to report it on Discord since they treated me so.
  • I never use instant messaging aps. I am social-phobic and the speed of them heightens my paranoia. The only experience I have with Discord is using it to download a mod for a game, some time ago and I didn't install anything to do it then. I have been scared of even trying using it for CF stuff, just having seen how others are being treated. Most larger companies are dictatorships (with some democracy), when it comes to those working there. This is taking it far and beyond, when you treat the players as subjects, not customers.

I would never survive long in CF´s Discord channel, with the strict rules they have surrounding swearing. Here I can usually pause before sending and check if I have written anything forbidden. In discord, I'd be stressed and send before checking. As i use foul-language all the time in real life it's very very hard. Generally I am against any kind of censorship and have had trouble with any kind of authority all my life. Being part of the CF community and trying to follow the rules are sometimes a true test of patience and seeing others not even trying irritates me. As I my self, have to really put up a psychic-effort to follow the rules.

I get what you mean by this. The Discord has a few frequent visitors that have running jokes with each other. So it's pretty hard to just enter and be familiar with everyone/the way they speak. I think you would have to be around longer to understand it's not about making others feel bad, just making jokes.

About the GM's conductship there, from what I see, they can't really see people "thinking" or "use logic" there and don't want people to have "big talks",they prefer see people spam bad jokes, they don't need people with lots of experience and what to contribute to "voice their opinions" , they rather prefer see kids spam ducks or spongebob pictures.people are entitled to their opinions, they can't just like in a dictatorship to threaten with mutes everyone who want to be a just a little bit more serious than post unicorns.

You are allowed to have discussions on Discord. I've had plenty. The point is to remain civil and the GM's will allow it. In the end the GM's don't voice their personal opinions on issues since they're probably not allowed to. As GM Kanadian once said: "whoever thought the Discord is a democracy?". In the end GM's have absolute power and you should abide by the rules.

I can't agree more with this. I use a Razer Kraken headset with USB. For some reason Discord doesn't recognize it at times, completely messing up my sound settings. On this point my preference still goes to Teamspeak.

The Discord is indeed targeted at a younger audience. While the game is PEGI 16 the Discord is PEGI 13. Complaints about cheaters/scripters on forum also get you banned, both the forum and Discord aren't the place to complain about them, just report them in game or by ticket. The forums are moderated nearly the same as the Discord and I don't know what you mean by "controversial" but I've had many political and filosophical discussions on Discord, which we were allowed to have by the MOD's and GM's.

Can't agree more on the "invisible" rules, players should be better informed about this when entering the Discord. It's not fair to get instantly muted for a rule you didn't know about. As for the Oompa Loompa reference, spot on, but isn't that society? In the end everyone wants to fit in.

It's not fair to get muted in such a way, so I understand your frustration, there should be clear mention of not being able to tag the "Game Master" role on Discord, only in urgent matters.

It took me a while to get used to. I was muted once before on Discord for using a slur that could be considered racist or discriminatory without even realizing. I never got muted since, but I would understand it's harder for some people to abide by the censorship in real time chat. Luckily there are also the voice channels I roam in, which are less heavily moderated.

That's my cents on everyone's views. I share my views with SirPano. One social platform doesn't replace the other. I prefer the forum since it gives overview and people write well thought out posts. I prefer Discord because it gives real time updates, is easily accessible and allows me to have CF friends who I might not play with because he/she plays different modes, but, with Discord, can still have a conversation with. On top of this, let's not forget the forum was already dying when the Discord was created.

I have to agree with some of what you say here.
I have not used the cf discord personally, but some of my clan members have, and been banned for having the sheer audacity to ask a certain GM about cheaters in game. :(
Anyone wanting to clan war ( That is almost dead by the way ) I would suggest making your own discord channel, where you yourself are in charge and can appoint your own trusted moderators.
This clan has its own discord and to be honest not a lot of people use it. We put up messages to each other more than chat, but at least we have our own chat rooms if we feel the need to clan war ie like a 3vs3 room or a 4vs4 room etc where we can chat uninterrupted in game by other server members. Also it is good if you make a clan room in game just for the sake of having some fun with your friends.
Personally from what I have been told by my clan mates? I would not touch the cf discord with a barge pole.
