'Timed out while initialing X-Trap engine' - McAfee Solution

Lately, the whole CrossFire Community had been plagued with X-Trap Errors. I have started this thread to post a solution which, in theory, should solve the 'Timed Out While Initialing X-Trap Engine' Error. I am not absolutely sure, but this MAY solve some of the other X-Trap loading errors. Finally, this thread is DEDICATED to solutions for the 'Time Out While Initialing X-Trap Engine' Loading Error and nothing else.

The reason that you get the error is most likely because of the fact that your Anti-Virus has quarantined one or more of the files that X-Trap requires in order to run properly. So in order to solve this problem, you will first need to restore those essential X-Trap files and prevent them from being quarantined again.

Lastly, I have the McAfee Anti-Virus so this guide will be based on that specific Anti-Virus. Most other Anti-Viruses should also look a lot like this, so just improvise and use your common sense.

Without further ado, here is the guide:

Step 1: Open up your Anti-Virus and go to the 'Restore' Tab or Menu. I have McAfee so if you have that simply open up McAfee SecurityCenter and look at the bottom left-hand corner, the 'Restore' Tab should be there.

Step 2: Check in the 'Programs and Cookies' Tab and make sure that no programs that are needed to run CrossFire are quarantined. Look for: Anything with 'Xtrap' in it, 'HGWC' or 'Crossfire.exe' (even thought it should be on the McAfee exception list by now). If you find that any of them are quarantined, select those programs in the 'Select' boxes and click 'Restore' in the bottom right-hand corner.

Step 3: Check in the 'Files' Tab and make sure that no files that are needed to run CrossFire are quarantined. Specifically, you should be look for any file with 'Xtrap' or 'xtrap' in it, but should you find any other files that have 'HGWC' or 'Crossfire' in them select those also. If you want to be extra precise the files you want to look for are: XDataFI0, XTrap.xt, XTrap.Ext.dll (remove the period in between XTrap and Ext) and XTrapVa.dll. So like the previous step, select the files in the 'Select' boxes and click 'Restore' in the bottom right-hand corner.

Step 4: On McAfee, there is currently no way to add any file to an Exception List of any sort so that it will not be quarantined again. So the best bet is to open up McAfee SecurityCenter, go to Settings and then Computer and Files (or something like that) and switch OFF all of the options (If you have another Anti-Virus just turn it off after restoring the files). I know that you may feel unsafe while doing this so do this only just before you start up CrossFire. And immediately after you have closed CrossFire, switch all the options back ON to prevent your computer from getting any viruses (If you have another Anti-Virus, just turn it back on after you close CrossFire).

Step 5: If you have McAfee, those X-Trap files may get quarantined again and again so I suggest that you periodically look at the quarantined programs and files and restore them so that you will not receive the error.

If any of you guys have an Anti-Virus that has an Exception List for files, add those essential X-Trap files to the Exception List so that you can be sure that those files won't get quarantined again.

Thanks for reading my guide. I hope this solves your X-Trap Initialization/Loading Errors so that you may play CrossFire again.

  • Yea dude nice guide. But they need to fix this cause i dont liek disabling my anti virus for a free game...
  • Thanks, TheABomb. I feel you, I don't like disabling my Anti-Virus for CrossFire either. But until they do come up with a fix for this, it's probably the only way that will let you play CrossFire.
    Did it work for you?
  • FYI Cross Fire for all purposes is an official program and it's most definitely virus free.

While we can't offer the same security for other things (like clicking ads or filling out surveys) we do offer a virus free game.

Not to mention it's generally AVG that gives the problems, rarely is it Norton or McAfee.

    Thanks for the guide.
  • Thanks Saidin. I'm sure that CrossFire is most definitely virus-free. But by turning off the Anti-Virus, the X-Trap problem doesn't seem to occur. Maybe something in the Anti-Virus is hindering X-Trap.

It generally has to do with the nature of the anti-hack tool.

Not only does the anti-hack tool work with the program itself to make sure that the code is not tampered with the anti hack tool will also perform searches of game files and directories.

It is often these searches within the directories that anti-virus programs will pop up saying its a trojan or virus. And while you should always be protected with an anti virus program, if you are doing nothing on your computer but running CF then you should be ok to disable the virus scanner for the time being!

We are in constant contact with Xtrap and the anti virus tools to make sure that everyone is on the same page so we can eliminate these problems as soon as possible, but they will always appear with new patches and updates.
  • Good! It's great to know that this problem will be fixed sooner or later in a patch. It is certainly quite an annoyance to have to switch of my Anti-Virus every time I want to play CF. But like I said, it's the only way I can play the game without my Anti-Virus blocking X-Trap, quarantining the essential X-Trap files and causing CF not to load.

Also, thanks for describing to me why the AV is giving me problems. I hope this is a solution to other people's X-Trap initialization problems.
