How to start a clan
I'm sure everyone knows "how" to start a clan. Well most people :-). This is just a small guide to help people that aren't sure where to start.
First, let me be extremely clear with everyone. Starting your own clan and being successful is hard work. It's very time consuming, and will test your patience often. You will have the stress of trying to make your team work and succeed. Not a simple task to do both.
There are a few things you should have before you think about starting a clan:
- Perseverance. You must be willing to stick it out, through thick and thin.
- An understanding of people. It is important to realize that you will not be alone and make adjustments for that.
- A willingness to work hard with a fair minded perspective. Success is the goal.
No matter how big you want to be, no matter what your specific goals may be, you want to survive and succeed. The truth of the matter is that 90% of clans do fail to be what one would call a "Top" clan, and typically before they ever get to be a few months old. Here are the top reasons why:
- Bad Leadership
- Inactivity
- No Recruiting or players leaving
- Disagreements/Problems within the team
Bad Leadership can be anything from a person who is not interested in letting others help to the self-centered officer who thinks the clan is more important than the people in it.
If your reason for wanting to start a clan is no other than to push people around and be the boss in charge, you're not going to be successful. I can tell you that right now.
Clans are not property, and they are certainly not gatherings of "your subjects" for you to boss around as you see fit. Clans are about the team and about the players. Simple as that. So you are willing to do the work, you know that your team will be a group of like-minded gamers having fun, and you've accepted that you will not succeed unless you respect others and work together?
***What to do first?***
--> The first thing you have to do once you have made the choice to start a clan is to develop an identity. You need to develop “who” or "what" your clan is. This is everything from the clans name to its “theme”, to who you want to recruit and so on. Put some thought into this, but also keep the mind-set that you do not have to make final choices here. Do some research about your clan name, are there other teams using the same name or tag? Being original will have you much better of than simply copying someone's idea.
***What now?***
--> You need to develop a strong foundation because this will consist of the core concepts of your clan. These few ideas will be largely determined by how you manage and run your clan. That is not to say that they cannot change, just that they are very important in the beginning.
- Ranking system and Recruiting standards. You need to determine how your team will be set up in terms of who is in charge of what. You should also determine the requirements you will have for recruiting new players.
- Clan Rules: A basic set of rules that determine what is allowed for your players and what is not. It does not necessarily have to be a complete list, but enough to get your point across as to how you want players to conduct themselves.
- Communication: You should have some means of voice communication that allows you to talk between each other. This will be key in executing effective strategies during clan scrimmages.
At this point you are are fully set to start running your clan. By now, you should have a pretty good idea of who your clan is, your requirements for new players, your recruiting approach, etc. This preparation will leave you with the availability to talk to prospective members, focus on player chemistry and have fun without having to worry about too many details.
Later on you will probably want to think about creating a website to help in promoting your clan.
--> Your site is very important, but perfection is not a requirement. The misconception is that people believe that they must have a perfect website in order to recruit new members. Of course, a great looking site helps, but it is nothing compared to how you run the team or how much fun you have while playing with your team. Don’t shy away from running a free site to start out with. There are several sites out there just for clans that will provide you with a very nice website for free. It is an easy way to start and lets you focus more on building content for the site instead of wasting early time with coding and graphics.
Also do not forget to involve your teammates. Make certain any new members you have take a role in improving the team. It will help you and provide some pride in your new players. Young teams are actually pretty good at passing around duties and helping each other out.
***Ending with a few final comments***
- Don’t rush it. Take your time building your clan and making a reputation for yourself.
- Don’t be afraid of change. Change will happen, get used to it.
- Expand smart. Recruit the right players the first time. Eliminate the headache of dealing with bad players.
- Good communication and a respectful attitude will help to solve disagreements before they ever get started.
Alright well, that's all for now. I'm sure I've missed some things but this should get you off to a good start. Thanks for reading! Good luck!

This is a fantastic guide.
I think many players rush to start a clan thinking about glory, and many are disbanded in the first week of their existence. Many also lead because they are better players, but lack the more "fatherly" aspect of leading a clan - socializing and organizing.
My top 2 reasons for clans falling apart are:
- Poor leadership
- Loss of core members
Thanks for this, I'll be checking against it as a guideline. -
Am I allowed to request for a sticky? lol I feel this is pretty important. Not sure about everyone else, but so far it seems like a pretty important subject to address. So many clans out there that have potential but never go anywhere. Maybe this can help a little bit

Wow thanks for the good support everyone. I didn't know people were still reading this, haha. I thought it would be long gone after it got off the 1st page :-). It would be nice for it to be stickied. More people need some guidelines on what they need to make a clan somewhat successful. Just trying to help.
