Help with email

Hi, im trying to get email notifications for my email acct for forums. Like it says for forum subscriptions that u can get an email when someone responds to a forum thing but i havent gotten any emails even though someone has responded to them. So is there something that i gotta turn on that will send me emails or what? Cause i hit thread subscription, then email notification but i havent gotten a notification in my email box. Can someone help? thanks.
