Different CF Versions

Are all CF Versions linked to each others ? like, Is it just one company controlling all versions of this game and giving licences to different countries and hire some people to manage the version of their ccountry ? or is it like copies of the original version ( whatever that version is ) with a slight different change in char/maps/weapons so it won't get copyrighted ? If anyone knows about this, kindly tell me.. I tried checking online and it says the original version is the Korean one..some tell me it's the Chinese, but when I search the location of the HQ of Z8, it says it's in Canada which makes me kind of flustered.
AND , if there's only one company giving licences to different countries to make their own version of the game, What happens if a country downloaded the game and made changes to some main files, created their own server and made money of the game this way ? Is this Illegal and punishable ?

  • Private servers are illegal and get shut down. CFNA / UK has it's hq located in Toronto. There are licenses for different regions which are purchased by companies like sgw. They pay royalties back to the parent company.

    I see, thank you.
Thus, I do wonder about something, I'm from Egypt, not too long ago. *deleted part* which makes me wonder if they purchased the license or downloaded it and illegally changed files.. So I thought I'd ask to get an answer and if it's indeed illegal then the GM'S would know about it.
  • Crossfire is originally a Korean game. The creator of this game is Korean. SmileGate is the developer/owner of copyrights of Crossfire. SmileGate is a Korean Company. Z8Games is only a publisher of this game. Z8Games publishes two versions of Crossfire: NA/UK & Brazil. Z8Games is a Canad-based game publishing company, that's why its HQ is situated in Canada. Z8Games doesn't own copyright of this game. If they want to publish this game in, say, Australia, they'll have to purchase license from SmileGate to do so. Just like Crossfire Europe is published by Gamerage.

You can't create a private server using the content of Crossfire as it is all copyrighted. Therefore, it's illegal for you to use Crossfire's files in any way other than intended. If you try to make commercial profits by making a server using Crossfire's files, you'll face a legal lawsuit.

So in a sense all crossfire versions are linked to the same owner, just different publishers. Thanks buddy

That is correct. The owner company SmileGate does not manage any other versions directly, all it does is it gets paid by issuing/renewing licenses and making and selling new content, like new guns, maps and so on. That's why the Publishers can manage a game however they want and add/remove stuff as they see fit. Best example is the Bonus Point system which was only featured in CFNA and not in any other version.

So in other words, it's not SmileGate's concern if there was an illegal private server? Since they have no control over other versions of the game, is that right? And for complaints regarding such things, the Korean org. Should be the one getting informed I guess?

That is incorrect. As the main copyright holder, The owner company is the one to have all concerns if someone uses their product illegally or without their consent. So SmileGate will be the one sending you a legal notice if you happen to create a private server.

By "have no control over versions of CF" I mean that the publisher manages their respective version and not SmileGate. This means that forums, Discord, events, weapon releases, employee management and partnerships with other companies like Razer etc are all managed by Z8Games and SmileGate has no direct input or say in these matters as long as Z8Games follow their terms and agreements.

    Yes, that is correct.
  • You can always inform us as well, as we will investigate and pass information along as necessary. However, please don't name any illegal servers or tell people to 'check them out'.
