Need some help with crossfire.

So, i know this usually goes somewhere in the tech support (i guess)

I just set up a old pc of mine, complete fresh windows, drivers, etc.

Downloaded Crossfire and installed/patched.

When i run the game as admin, patcher pops up, HGW goes trough, my taskbar changes to "default", then the bar changes back
and nothing else happens, the game simply wont do anything to start up..
Taskmanager doesnt show it running either.

System is some old crappy pc (that i used to play cf with years ago 70ish frames)
Windows 7.
Firewall is turned off.

Did i miss anything? would like some help from the worthy Tech members on this forum.

  • I've got exactly the same problem on my old laptop, never was able to fix it tho, it's working on my new laptop I bought few years after my old one.
Sorry I'm not a good helpar lol
  • I had that before and I installed and updated the following.
Windows SP1 and every possible update.
    • Latest Direct X
    • Most Important I updated Graphic Card from Manufacture website.
  • What is your PC hardware ?

    1. Try disable UAC from control pannel : Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts - Change user accounts control settings - lower the bar to never notify me , apply then restart your pc
I wouldn't recommend this because ALL files that run will be able to have admin privileges without you even knowing while it's disabled, but if you do do it, remember to turn it back on afterwards. It can cause HUGE issues if you don't.
    2. Check pagefile : Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System - click advance system settings (will open system properties) - choose advanced - performance - settings , again advanced : here you have virtual memory : click change , disable automatically manage ... check custom seize , enter initial seize 2048 and maximum seize 2048 ( or whatever same value, i usually keep this set on 4250 MB - so windows will keep all time same page file seize and no more reseize-it all time) , click SET and restart.
I also wouldn't recommend messing with the page file size if you don't even know the specs of the computer or you don't know for certain if it's the issue... Leaving it on automatic is perfectly adequate for 99% of things and increasing it could adversely affect hard drive performance if you don't have much RAM.

IF you would read, u'd know i dont even have antivirus on my PC... thx anyways i guess
  • -> Even with UAC enable you can bust your PC most of the time if you always press YES and not read all message that windows display,
Haha yes that is true ^^

I have that problem at work, there was 1 person who just pressed yes to everything and he end up with ransomware on his computer and we had to completely wipe it, it was not a fun day getting him set up on a new computer in 24 hours haha

But things that get downloaded in the background through malicious ads or with 'free games' from a certain website (Yarrrr!) can run as admin with UAC disabled and it's not fun dealing with the fallout :D
  • Just keeping Whoever might be intressted up to date.

Had to wipe my HDD once again- bootmgr missing...

Currently re-installing windows and giving it another try. Im pretty much sure i found the soultion to my problem wich is,
When i installed CF, and tried to run it, i realized i didnt even have Directx, Visual c++ and all these programs that should USUALLY come with the game- might be my fix right there.

Once i managed to run the game, i let u guys know what i did.... taking to long than it might be worth it xD
