HGW Step 3 means the crossfire servers are still offline. you can check server status here: http://mmoserverstatus.com/crossfire
edit: I now notice this is after the servers are offline. We will have to wait for an update

Steps:
1. Go in c.f folder right click on version.ini open properties uncheck "read only" apply..ok. Next
2. step open version.ini normally then there u'll find 'latest version' and the version number written. rn its 2080 i guess.. Im not sure abt the first 2 digits, anyway the only change u have to do is.. On the last 2 numbers dnt change the first 2 numbers on latest version line. If its '79' make it '80' or if its '80' make it '81' im sorry i forgt wts the current version number and iam away from pc..
U get that error cuz version number is wrong in ur version.ini file and it wnt update on its own..so this is the manual method.
3. Anyway after writing the next number on the Place of last two digits close it.. Thn right click on version.ini. and open Properties check on 'read only' box.. Apply and close..double click on patcher and let it download the current patch.
SIDE NOTE: U can even Skip the last "read only" check box step. It will only roll back the number to its original (i.e the current version number) if u have written the wrong number on latest version . example : latest version :2080 and u made it latest version :2085 " this will roll back to its original version 2080 since version 2085 does not exist. this is only when you dnt check on "read only" after making chnges. However if you do check on "read only" box and wrote a wrong number there it will not roll back to its original number it will give u 'failed to download the patch file" but dw..all u hv to do is follow the steps above and write the current version number and start the patch. The patcher will run if ur latest version is correct and it will download the latest version if it already did not automatically.

The 2nd issue..:
My c.f is working now finally. Tbh I did nothing in particular it just started working on its own. How ever..A clan mate of mine said he had the same issue and he told me he fixed it by clean uninstalling the game and installing it in compatibility mode.
Steps to Install in compatibility mode:
-right click on installation file
-open properties
-select compatible tab
-then check the box that says somethin like run this program in compatible mode (something like that) and select windows 7
-next on same tab in bottom there will be another check box saying run this program in admin mode check that too..
-press apply then ok and then run the installation.
This fixed it for my clan mate..however when I tried it didnt fix the issue for me.. I was on c.f using vpn that time..thts how ik abt this. Anyway the next day.. I downloaded fresh copy of c.f from website and installed it without compatibility mode or anything..just installed it normally.. And it worked. Maybe they found a fix or smthng? Oh however even though it did worked..I made some changes by opening Properties then selecting Compatible mode..basically the same above steps but on the game client instead of the installation file. So if anyone wants to try these following steps try it.. I hope it may help you guys. -

Those info will help devs identify if there is network problem (like any region restricted by mistake, a program that intefreer and block the game.. etc)
Also CF must be added to antivirus / firewall exception list (or just turn off your antivirus and firewall before start game - see if game is launched)
I just test game and is running fine

For all players having this issue, please provide more info:
1. Country (or region) from where are you playing
All Indian players are facing this problem as location was restricted under previous patch, hope the current maintenance fix this issue. I say this because some desperate players opened and played crossfire using VPN with same pc which is illegal. Please don't do this, your accounts can be banned. I thank TheShadowRo for supporting the issue -

It's been about 6 days since my game hasnt been working. It started with the invalid version and since i couldnt fix it i left it like that for two days and now it doesnt get past step 3 of HGW >:L
I MISSED THE FEB 14 EVENT AND SUCH. Please fix this already. I already re-downloaded the CF from the website and reinstalled 5 times. Tried the verision.ini thing to updatee. turned off my wifi for 5mins 5 times already. Turned off my Firewall and Antivirus.
I live in THE PACIFIC NORTH WEST. Portland, Oregon, USA. Not some far country. I dont hack either so i shouldnt be IP banned so WTF ?>>>??? -
For those who face this probleme :
step 1 - restart pi and try again (it solve my probleme)
step 2 - Run as admin
step 3 change ur pc resolution
step 4 uninstall and re install
step 5 cry and try all u can try to fix it sometimes it take some try and it will work again.. good luck since i play cf it happened to me some times... -
GM hasn't replied to me since I sent a ticket about this problem. They have to fix this really soon.

Worked fine after I downloaded and reinstalled the game again. Be sure that no old folders and files are left after uninstall, that seem to have caused a problem.
Don't know why they were still left, as I only have installed and updated like you are supposed to do and except for the .ini version fix I haven't touched the game folder.JackPain (Sweden) -
I click the big Play button and HGW Pops up instantly staying at step 3. Its been like this for a few days now. I like in Pacific West Coast in The Dalles, Oregon, USA. Running Windows 10 on a Lenovo Touchscreen 12gb RAM Notebook.
I tried downloading the whole game from the website and installing it again, Didnt work.
I tried reinstalling the game various times, It didn't work.
I tried deleting literally every single crossfire file, it didnt work.
I tried manually fixing the version.ini to the latest version, It updated but didn't work.
I tried turning off my windows firewall and disabling my antivirus, It didn't work.
I tried turning off my modem for 5 minutes then starting it five times, It didn't work.
I tried flushing my DNS, It didnt work.
I tried a various combitation of the past listed things, Nothing worked.

Update: Yesterday, After updating my laptops drivers i got the game to load to the login screen after 3-5 attempts of getting stuck at step 3 of HGW. After the login screen loads a message popped up saying "Cannot connect to server". I was like woah and kept trying everhthing i listed again but it all went downhill because i downloaded the game from the website and installed it again and now it gets stuck at step 3 regardless of how many attempts i try.
Thank you Crossfire for having literally no feedback from some kind of staff or employee. My ticket was sent 4 days ago and no reply. I havnt payed crossfire since about Febuary 12, Before the HGW Step 3 error i was getting an invalied .ini error.

I think it's really our IP I am in Saskatoon, SK Canada and i've only had it work 3x in the past 9 days and it was short lived lol I think we have to wait for the next patch. If it still ain't working, I'll just stop playing again. I really want to play the game as I stopped playing for 5 years. -

Same problem here.. I got a new computer complete with a 240hz monitor for this specific game and I can't even play it because of the lag on the first place, and now I have to rely on a VPN which makes the lag even more unbearable... I know the discord thing with the GM's exist, I just don't get why we, the players, are the one left to figure stuff out on the Support forum itself... I wish more official support are here and not just other players that experienced the same thing... it kinda makes the Support Forum useless at this point, and make people in charge of these forums look incompetent -

Now nothing works for me either. Nice in the middle of an event, where you have to login everyday and play. Well it's only 10 crates.
