I have never been in a clan before. What are clan points that are listed for each member.
How are they earned and what do they mean? Just wondering.

Every 500xp, U get 1 clan point.

They used to mean how active a clan was. More Member's = More clan point's. But since all the farming they basicly have no purpose.

It's what determines the rank of your clan. Like king said: every 500 xp you gain = 1 clan point. You can get a max of 10 clan points each day.
Clans lose 10% of their clan points each week. Clan with most points = highest ranked.

still not sure how this works, I have 337,308 in exp
divided by 500 = 674 clan points


but it says I have 253 clan points

there must be something else I am not understanding

It only counts the experience you earn while you are in the clan.
