headset issues

i just bought a usb heatset today, went to plug it is, sound works, but the microphone doesnt, when i go to listen to it, it just makes a buzzing noise. when i hit mute, the buzzing noise stops, and i can also hear the buttons being pressed to make the volume go up and down on the headset.. i tried google, couldn't find anything.

any help would be appreciated

*it says speakers are plugged in, when i have a headset plugged in.. and no speakers plugged in, makes no sense....
