game crashes to desktop when login box appears

so when i launch crossfire the game updates normally,
then i see the background image from the loading screen,
then the login box thingy appears, but i can't login because about 1/10th of a second after i see the box the game crashes to desktop, leaving me without error message
using windows 8.1, tried using compatibility mode as windows 7 and XP, but same thing happens

there has been a thread about this issue.
Maybe there will be a solution for you. The guy got rid of the game crash with the new patch.
