Windows 8.1 Bug?
I recently bougth a new laptop with windows 8.1 and when I wanna play crossfire the following happens:
1. I start CF_G4box.exe as admin
that opens the regular starting screen.
2. I click on the green start button
USUALLY that opens the patcher_cf.exe but it doesn't for me.
Basicly after clicking the start button it closes and does nothing.
Both of my laptops are medion
I am using AVG on both of my laptops, but it only occurs on my new laptop with windows 8.1
I have tried re-installing the whole game but did not solve this problem
And also tried running CF_G4box.exe in compatibility mode for windows 7, vista and XP
I have tried playing it on my old laptop with windows 7 and this problem does not occur
Do I maybe need to download some software other than crossfire to make it work?
(Something like networkframe, IDK)

This thread is for my problem.. -
I get that sometimes too, but usually i just go back again and start the client again after i get that error message and thevgame starts fine
the problem is, I dont even get the error message, I press start and nothing happens after that -
clear compatibility mode exe entries
open the command prompt as administrator and copy/paste this:
%windir%\System32\reg.exe DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers" /f
I've did exactly what you said but unfortunate it didn't work -
Same thing from your problem happened to me last year when I got this new laptop with windows 8, then after upgrading to 8.1 CF just don't open anymore, but since its a new laptop, I just did an clean system recovery and CF worked fine after that. This solution probably should be considered as an last resort if you can't find anything else to solve it.

First try running patcher_cf.exe directly from the folder where CF is installed (i run cf from this, waste of time running it from Crossfire and blah blah ).
I have also windows 8.1,CF works fine except when i have to close it it gets stucks and i have to close it from task manager (bcz of 64 bit windows, sol. for MFC client error is 32 bit windows in CF case).
Make sure you have DIRECT X 9.0 C or newer.
Secondly,as windows 8.1 has built-in Antivirus(windows defender),so you should remove AVG,if you don't download or browse website which are malicious or can contain malware...
Also update your Graphic card drivers or install them(if they are not installed :P)
Use thisFree version is better than pirated
