Can't Adjust Screen resolution

So I've tried playing the game, I always set my resolution to 800 x 600 however, whenever I set it and play, I'm still at 1024 x 768. Can someone please help me out? because this is getting annoying. I cannot play the game with my screen so big, i need it to be smaller so I can play comfortably.
