Well I assume you're referring to the event that's giving out the Anti-Zombie Crate (the one with all 4)? If so here's the differences...
your suggestions of Ribbon/Coupon rewards are
-100% guaranteed of a previously released, via ZP crate, special weapon.
>While high ribbon count is indeed 'hard'/time consuming, ribbons shouldn't reward a previously released weapon in many peoples opinions and have always been unique. (note that the Shovel Red Dragon was a Ribbon reward before the crate release of it thus making it a bit of an exception)

This event that dishes out a fair amount of crates DOES NOT guarantee 100% a weapon. Therefor not everyone will get one and everyone has the same changes providing they put in the effort. So effort+crate chances of winning = okay. Effort+100% guarantee of a previously released weapon = bad. This is also why people are generally okay with the Infection and now Fatal Wasp series is that for the AA12 and P90s ZM3 versions you have to collect pieces which means playing the ZM3 maps multiple times to get enough to exchange them for a TEMPORARY version. Their mentality on this is, actually, quite consistent and realistic in allowing players to have their cake and eat it too without getting too angry at the paradox. -

Here's a funny story.. I bought 20 crates, and I set them on auto spin, just when I had only 3 crates left, I gave up..., so I bought another 10. The moment I bought those 10, I heard me winning on last crate. I was like seriously..?! xD
Well, I'm still glad.
Remember not to give up, and don't underestimate 1 crate luck!!
