To ESG (How to run a league)

Taking from this quote - "Fine. You guys are the experts. You run the League." - Polleus.

I decided to outline on how to schedule and run a league since it obviously takes someone with a bit more intelligence then this community has to offer.

First do NOT do divisions or release schedules for more then two weeks in advance. I have stated this a billion times for hundreds of reasons to so many different leagues. Divisions are the absolute worst, they either become a wildly unbalanced where one team cruises to victory against 4 other teams who are absolute downies, or a division becomes stacked and we lose 3 of the 4 best teams in the league before playoffs. The next flaw with divisions resides in when a division dies, and one team is left and just doesn't play until the playoffs.

Now nerds have continued to argue that real leagues like the NFL have divisions and it works great. Well thats true, except this is an online F2P game, without league entrance fees, and no requirements except to put 5 random names down on a website. Teams will die, you need to expect that. The last time an NFL team folded was in the early 20's, where low and behold the NFL only released schedules a couple weeks in advance of games.

After you finally get over your division fetish the next issue that all leagues in Crossfire have is that they always release an entire schedule of teams playing against other teams. This means that Egy%(p)T has 16 scheduled matches against other teams. We all know that Egy%(p)T is going to do one of three things. Their never going to show to a single game, their going to get smashed in their first game and never show up to another, or their going to cheat/break a rule/do something else stupid and never show up to another game. This means that now for that single team you have 15 other teams who are going to get a ffw. No one wants that.

So what does only scheduling games two weeks in advance give us? Well there's the obvious that now no teams will be scheduled to play against dead teams, which is a 100% perfect reason to do this, but there is more. This will allow all teams to have a balanced schedule and teams on the verge of a playoff berth to play other teams on the verge of a playoff berth. Simply put if Team Obama was 6-0 and only played teams with a below .500 record, then ESG could start to force them to play a harder schedule to balance out the league. This could mean that in game 7 Team Obama will play team davidghoststomuch who was 5-2 with only loses coming from (uncasted) matches vs ralf'sRus and malte gaming. This would make Team Obama fight for that 1st place they currently hold.

Other reasons include two teams who are 6-6 being scheduled vs each other instead of both playing teams who are 2-8 in meaningless games. This also helps teams who can replace dead teams to be able to replay teams who received FFW's (more on that below). There is literally no positive to releasing a full schedule at once other then to "look professional" (It always backfires)

So onward to the last issue. Currently teams receive a win for a FFW, that's dumb, plain and simple. Another dumb thing is replacement teams receiving the record of the dead team. So killing a whole murder of crows without even a stone all you need to do is simply replay the games that were received as FFW's (which wouldn't count towards records) against the incoming replacement teams, insuring an equal playing field. Another great positive from this system is that teams will no longer try to dodge teams and force defaults and forfeits due to them having to just replay the match vs another team.

Last but not least, what is the point in the continual harassment by certain ESG admins. Ones who truly know nothing about the game, the players, or how to run a league seem to be the biggest of harassers. I see people talk some small smack on esg and instead of just turning around, explaining your solution (if its not idiotic for once) and telling them to have a nice day, you instead threaten to ban them for posting on a forum that is not controlled by esg, try to humiliate them (failing), and then make an ass out of yourself.

This is WOGL or Evan from OCG levels idiotic. I expect that from complete garbage leagues like wogl and ocg, so tell me, is esg a garbage league as well? All in all, esg staff should stick to their specialty if you're a coder, code the anticheat, the website, a league script. Don't try to do public relations, or business, or league operations, you blow at it. Just code, its what your good at.

Ps: Hire someone for public relations to post on forums, esg staff is failing miserably.

All in all, I'm the best league manager ever. GG mallcop!

So basically what you are saying is if a team forces default, and the opposing team can't make it a match may be replayed? What is the point of default then? People don't have the time to make a match at any time. I know for a fact people clear tues-thurs at 9 to play in this league. Do you really expect people to play matches more than 2x per week?

I really don't like the idea of your plan, to my understanding you are saying if X Team is one of the top teams in the division/conference/whatever that team will continually play better teams. To me it sounds a little unfair to have one team play the #1 team more often than another team. Say for example, ACE.MSI was first in the division and FSX was second, then FSX lost to ACE twice while the 3rd ranked team beat the 4th ranked team twice. Now the 2nd/3rd place teams are basically fighting for the 2 and 3 seed when one of them clearly had a tougher schedule.

My second flaw with your plan is that it is way more time consuming than the way things are currently ran. Polleus barely keeps up with the match reports as is (no offense), he would have to find the time to do all this extra stuff to keep the league balanced.

I actually like the idea of having a schedule weeks in advance, teams are able to prepare thoroughly for the matches/maps they feel are more difficult.

Long story short, took me 5 minutes. Dem 30 page med papers.
  • As much as many people would hate to do so, Ryangi is on point and accurate. Mike likes to issue the ban hammer to much... Iceman is also to sensitive to deal with people since he likes to ban people out of spite...

Only person who was decent at communicating with people was Polleus considering that is what his degree is in but he seems to be losing it also. Completely unprofessional.

On the other hand, ESG has to deal with a bunch of whiney and *****y people who complain about every single possible thing in this game. So I justify the actions, but it is still unprofessional.

    Eh, Ryan's right
  • The current way we schedule is to have based on round robin, not a swiss style schedule. If you want a swiss style schedule, feel free to make your own league.

And I haven't banned anyone for a while other than cheating infractions. My goal is to have a positive play for people to play, so if I have to ban the people who cause problems or exist solely to troll, so be it. Iceman didn't ban anyone out of spite, they were warned multiple times and decided to ignore those warnings.

Instead of banning you straight away, I've decided to give you a warning for the disrespect towards the ESG staff.

And this is exactly what im talking about. You decide to say "well were running a round robin schedule" - So why the **** are you running a crappy outdated TOURNAMENT style schedule for a league? Round robins are designed for quick tournaments over the course of a few days with 16 or less teams. Not an entire season with 60+. Please don't have autism and actually explain why you think your system is better when its clearly not working.

"I haven't banned anyone for a while" Then threatens to ban me for pointing out mistakes in his league. The WOGL logic.

Go ahead and ban me for "disrespect" I don't play crossfire, I play counterstrike, and the day you have any stock in that game the way your currently running this league, esports would be all but dead.
  • tldr of this thread

    polleus is only decent one

both mike and iceman can go **** off
  • Luckily, we're working on a new system that will be able to accommodate a swiss-style of scheduling. I do agree that round robin is not the ideal system so when our new system is in place we will try different things.

    Swiss-style is awesome.
