Looking for a cartoon and comicbook

There was some cartoon few years ago on tv about WW1, I'm not sure but I think main character was British spy and ladys lover. Few months ago there was documentary about person who wrote whole story and there was mentioned that first it was comicbook. I remember a lot of gore and atmosphere was somehow mystical. That is all I can remember now, if something else comes in my mind I'll post it.
