Wisdom teeth

Monday, I went to my local public hospital to the dentist to get my teeth checked, and once my turn finally came, she checked out my teeth, she really liked the shapes and strengths of them, and after giving me a prophy (clean and polish) she asked me to go get my x-rays taken.. After lunch I had my x-rays checked and found out that my bottom two wisdom teeth are growing diagonally, she said I should get them removed. Well, me being a curious little guy actually Googled it and found out that's a pretty scary surgery, does anyone have any experience that can give me advice about it? :L

I think hes talking about the actual surgery.

Wisdom teeth that grow fine will obviously hurt less than ones that grow to press against other teeth.

Considering it's two teeth, I'd ask to be put to sleep and you won't have to worry about anything (except being AWAKE).

This. You can be put asleep while they are doing surgery. Although it's a massive pain when you are awake for the next few days after surgery. Most likely they will give you painkillers. The best option is to get them out, you won't regret it when you're older.
  • I was lucky enough that all of my wisdom teeth were accessible enough to be pulled like any other tooth, though the dentist had to loosen them a little with what's basically a mallet and blunt chisel. One had a third root that was hooked at the bottom but the dentist was able to pull it at the right angle so it didn't break off.

Other than the possibility of roots breaking, the only thing you really have to watch is to make sure food doesn't get into the remaining gum space which if left unchecked long enough could cause life-threatening infections.
  • mine came out straight so i was lucky, the teeth in front of them had cavities so i got those removed instead and the wisdom teeth took their place instead, avoided a lot of pain and saved some money.
  • Mines growing nicely, no need to take them out. Lucky me i guess :D

  • Sorry to scare you but it's not good.. at all.
My brother removed them and it was just painfull to watch, he also had alot of stitches, and not to mention the bleeding :/
    Sorry for dem bad news..
    But hey, only hurts once!

oh lord, you pay for dentistry

    aw chucks
  • Its not as bad as people say it is. I had mine removed back in august and the worst part was drinking the liquid penicillin the next day. The surgery itself is not painful nor is the next few days after the surgery. I suggest getting them removed EARLY in the morning. Mine appointment was at 6:00am so the night before i didn't sleep at all. As soon as they give you the "laughing gas" just close your eyes and you'll be asleep while they put the anesthesia in. If you take my advice and don't sleep the night before, you will be asleep the entire day and night after the surgery. Its quite nice tbh. Hope it goes well :)
  • In my mouth, the two smaller molars (smaller ones on each side) are growing diagonally through my mouth and causing a disturbance to the roots of the other teeth, it's been like this for 3-4 years now. This is because my baby molar teeth wouldn't fall out because they weren't being pushed out so they had to be removed.

Anyway, now it's been 3-4 years later and they've hardly moved, and only cause me a little pain sometimes, about two years ago they said they'd come out naturally through my pallet (the roof of my mouth) but they've not, so they're seeking surgery soon.

Apparently the surgery doesn't hurt until about a week after, and only then it's minor pain.
  • I had mine pulled on October 17th, 2013. All 4 of them were taken out surgically.
    Yep. All 4 of them!

So it was awhile ago. My gums healed completely in January.
I was put asleep because that was the best option they could give me. Personally, I didn't like the fact that I had to keep gauze in my mouth for 24 hours because it hurt to keep them in there with my mouth open. The taste of blood was irritating.

Dentist said to me before the surgery, change of diet for 2 weeks. Soft foods only, no sodas, no other forms of junk food etc.

That practically drove me crazy! But the thing is, is that I won't have to worry about a thing when I get older so.. to be honest, it was worth it.

It'll be okay, it'll be just the same for you but, some people are faster healers than others.

yeah anything after $3,000 comes out of my pocket, i had previous work done, so my balance wasn't maxed out, they charge so much just to knock you out, lady thought i was nuts if i could bypass that..
  • I had a friend that took them out... she was staying home for like two weeks before she could come to school again. Her jaws were really swollen and she was in pain most of the time.. near the end she didn't feel as much pain as before but yeah...
