I believe HT lost to china in the 1st/2nd place match, so i guess they didn't beat a Chinese team, but I could be wrong

It wasn't a guaranteed win, they wanted to make sure. They thought they could trust the guy and get a guaranteed win out of it, so a free trip to China. It was a gamble and they lost it.
