national guard

I talked to a recruiter yesterday.. this seems like something id really enjoy. Most of you know the NG as weekend warriors, but the NG is actually a self sustaining army of its own and were one of the first ones overseas. Now, i know a lot of people dont agree with the war, and i dont either, but the benefits are pretty amazing. I can go to any 4 year university or any tech college for free, they will pay my rent while in basic training along with the usual health care benefits.

Id like to hear your opinions on this.

P.s does anybody remember me? Its been awhile since ive ventured over to these forums lol..

  • If you really want this for you and for your family then go ahead. I'd like to be in army or something related to it one day but I am not sure ... I will most likely get Vet medicine or something ... You should ask for opinions to your family and not in this forums since they are the ones that will be always for you. It is a hard job and you should see this video if you haven't already : http://www.nationalguard.com/playlist/5 . I already heard of National Guard and I'd love to be there one day after finishing Uni. Once again it is in your hands. But if you apply and you get accepted don't quit in day one. If you quit in day one that is because you will quit everything you are going to do for the rest of your life. You are going to do that extra step if you apply so don't give up.
  • I wish you the best! Its your choice! I hope God bless you on your chosen way!
  • Im a single 20 y.o male. No kids or significant other. So its pretty much just to make sure im set for my future and when i do have a family they will be well off as well. And im only asking for opinions here because id like to see what you guys think about it. I know a lot of people here are younger than me but it doesnt matter. No matter what anybody says, im going to go thru with this. Thanks for your reply and the link. Ill watch it when i get to work:)
  • Why not just go regular army like I did?

Get to take off from home for a few years and go live in new places. What MOS were you looking at?

I was looking at telecommunications specialist and diesel mechanics. Im not too sure which one ill choose, if either of em. It all depends on my asvab i guess
  • unless i've misunderstood, the national guard does the national rescue stuff like in case of natural disaster.

so at least they got that going for them..

the name seems kind of misleading if they do work overseas.

It is mostly work in the nation. So you didnt misunderstand. When national guard members got sent over seas, it was the first time in 70 years. So its a rare occurance. All of the recruiters in the office have been overseas

Yeah def take your asvab and see what your options are.

And good on you for looking at jobs that you can take outside of the army. My parents told me to do that, and I should have listened. Not much use for a 19D outside of the army. Mechanic is a great career path...but of course all the combat types will talk smack on you :P

But then your motto gets to be: "In the rear with the gear (and beer)." so you got that going for you.

well, i haven't been keeping myself up to date, but i take it the risk of you getting sent overseas is slim at worst?

if so, i say go for it.
a strong national guard to keep the citizens safe during disasters is very important.
  • my ex-girlfriend went off to training with the national guard back in october. She came back during the holidays. When i talked to her she was extremely happy she went towards that path. Might suit you as well, who knows. :/
  • As someone who is going to eventually become an officer, I'd look into more. The reason why I chose the Naval Academy and ultimately eventually the Navy/Marine Corps is because of the choices. There are SO many ratings (mos for others) in the Navy. You get technical training out of the Navy too.

Father was Airborne in the Army yet West Point wasn't for me because the choices aren't diverse compared to the Navy.

Subs, Surface, Amphibious, so many! You get to see the world!

hehe, you get to see much of the world inside a sub? =D

Haha not while underway, but when you port, it's amazing. Most sailors travel to foreign areas and they mostly enjoy it!

cheap booze and exotic women (also cheap), that's all i hear from the officers i work with.
  • Just took my pre-asvab test(20 mins) and scored an estimated 82 :3
