Do you have to download it till it is 100% in order to keep the copy?
Even if you start the download and pause at 1% it will still register on your account. To make sure, open steam and click on your account on the top right corner, then account details. If you look under subscriptions you should see item "Left 4 Dead 2" and acquisition method "complementary". This means you own it so no need to download it now. -
