gaming laptop

no point in getting a 'gaming laptop'
their battery life sucks just surfing the web, the max you can get is 3-4 (apart from alienware) 1-2 gaming
alienware is over priced for the hardware they put inside but have decent battery life
most laptops are not modular (you can't always swap out sh1t)
they're heavy and defeat the point of 'mobility'
they become out of date by the next year and have a low resell value
they can't keep up with desktops without paying over 1,500 but then you end up with a 10lb 'laptop' that over heats, and cost 1,500 year 1, but year 2 it's down to like 800 and the newest games can't be maxed out anymore
edit: if you're not convinced
i would either go with this

for 1,000, although it is a 650m, it's in SLI so you have dual cards, which has comparable performance to 670MX/6990M found in laptops around $1,300+
MSI quality kinda scares me
but for 300 dollars more

you get an amd based laptop with a better graphics card, probably can run ultra on most games out there, but the CPU is the weakness of this machine, if they just gave it an i7 it would be perfect. -

And with 3 grand you can build a PC that is 3 times more powerful.
Could get 2 690s with that money.
Yea that's true. I know you can get a way better desktop for 3 grand but he asked for a "gaming laptop" so I linked him the best one out. -
intel i5 3750k (don't get the i7, use that money to get a better graphics card, i5 is all you need anyways) - $220
8 gb DDR3 ram - $60
motherboard - $120 (pick based on your needs)
main hard drive - 2TB $90
boot drive SSD 64gb, $60
graphics - msi 2gb GTX 670, $320, 300 after rebate
psu - corsair 650W tx series, $90, 70 after rebate
any case will do
if you need a monitor, get rid of the boot drive (SSD) -

ye, just get an awesome rig instead of getting a gaming laptop, and a good rig would be 3x time powerful then a laptop ever would. -
Lenovo Y500/501 are good laptops for the price. Battery life is bad, and GPUs underclock on battery power. If you get it with the Ultrabay, you will not be able to run SLI on battery power. So basically, just take out the battery and have it plugged in when you want to game with it. Otherwise, awesome laptop for a decent price.

He asked for a laptop. That's not a laptop. -

Unless you really are stuck on the idea of buying a laptop (for what ever reason) it is almost always going to be a better idea to buy a small cheap laptop for school/day carry and then a desktop for any "heavy" work. Your wallet and back will love you more.

I owned a fully loaded M17x R3. Don't buy it. I've had so many issues with it and the support. After four of them I just said screw it, returned it, and bought a desktop. Oh! and then 7 months later I got my name plate replacement- And they spelled my name wrong anyways.
As for a laptop, I was looking at getting an Asus or MSI laptop. -
Got ASUS G75VW. Been a while, runs Crossfire 8v8 @ 200 FPS and other games like Black Ops 2 at high settings smoothly.
3rd Gen i7-3630QM Proc @ 2.7-3.4 GHz
16 GB DDR3 (Can go up to 32 GB)
750 GB hdd @ 7200 rpm
Nvidia GeForce GTX 670M
Windows 8
Blu-ray
~10 lbs weight
Battery life is ~ 2hrs while playing Crossfire
~4 hrs when not gaming.
^Would highly recommend it. -
