How about a built in FPS limiter?

I posted in another thread that I wanted a FPS limiter because my computer would overheat if I didn't have a FPS cap, I use to use ***ory to limit my FPS but appearantly it was also a ''hack tool'' so it was patched, but why not have a built in FPS limiter in the options settings like World of Warcraft? I've been trying to find a fps limiter that isn't ***ory but the ones I tried made my computer laggy, and v-sync doesn't help since it caps my fps at 60 and even that makes my computer overheat, if Crossfire had a built in FPS limiter then that would solve all of my problems, and maybe a few others peoples problems too.

  • did you even try forcing vsync on your gfx control panel?

I don't know why most people would need it, but it doesn't hurt to add it.

    oh, I see.

in all honesty I'd do something about your PC overheating instead of limiting your FPS - you can also try underclocking with something like MSI afterburner.

there's no way to cap the FPS within CF's options.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it and see how it goes.
But a FPS limiter option would still be nice, hehe.
  • Underclocking my computer seems to have helped a bit, but it isn't running as well like when I used to use ***ory to limit my FPS, I tried Bandicam to limit my FPS but it was making Crossfire lag.
  • Optimize your computer then underclock it. Which part of your computer is overheating? What processor do you have?
  • If your computer is so terrible that it overheats at 60fps. Get a new computer.

I've already defragged my computer with O&O defrag, I've already ran Advanced System Care, the area that was overheating was the keyboard, the touchpad, to the left of the touchpad, and the exhaust vents, it's a laptop.
Unfortunately I won't be getting a new computer until about 2 years later, my family is on the poor side and we are trying to save money, that's why I keep trying to optimize my computer as much as possible, and which is one of the reasons I'm trying to find a way to limit the FPS.

    get a laptop cooler.
it helps. but it might be a bit loud
  • Yeah this would be nice. If not I need a new computer -.- And actual desktop and not a lappy.

    Not all laptops are bad

op whats your laptop and specs of it
  • Im pretty sure it's your problem alone. I have a prebuilt, ok, computer and it runs crossfire at 120-198 fps without any problems. My tip is, MORE FANS! Or if you really want to, get a liquid cooling system.

Download speed fan and check the heat levels. Your graphics card is more then likely overheating and needs be cleaned and you need to check if the fan is still working. If not replace the fan in the graphics card or leave the side panel of the computer off and place a fan next to it and keep it on while you play.

I'll try to find one, but even if I get 1 I still think a FPS limiter option would help alot.

It's a Satellite L355D-S7819, it has a AMD Athion Duel Core Mobile Processor QL-60, 3072MB 800MHz SDRAM, and a 160GB Hard drive, its a little beat up though because it was used by other people before.

Speedfan says the HD0 is 31C, the Temp1 is 56C, and the Core is 61C, this is when I was just using the internet though. The fans seem to be broken and I don't have the money avaliable to fix them, I'll try your other suggestions, but even if this fixes my laptop's heat problem it'd still probably help to have a fps limiter option. Thanks for the suggestions!

But I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

    No overheating.

That looks a tad too complicated for me.

    I don't understand this, sorry.

@HunteyForYou, I tried your fan suggestion, it seems to have helped a bit but the FPS is now jumping about, like when I'm in 1 location it's 89 FPS and then it suddenly goes to 30 FPS in a different location, this might be another reason a FPS limiter option for Crossfire would be a good thing... at least I'm able to play again even with the jumpy FPS so thank you, I'm still searching for another FPS limiter to use though.
  • 61C is not overheating. Just make sure it doesn't get any hotter than that because that's very close to overheating.
  • Racks1337 wrote: »

This was when I was only using the internet though, when I'm running Crossfire on medium graphics it used to heat up to about 70C after a few minutes of playing, I underclocked my computer and used the fan suggestion and the heat seems to be lower, but the FPS jumps around because I don't have a FPS cap on.

well, it is since he mentioned he gets 61C by simply browsing the internet.
61C might not be high for a GPU but it is pretty high for a processor.

My processor runs at 60C-88C continiously.

@topic starter - I forgot to mention page file. Try disabling your page file. Page file is like virtual RAM. It's on your hard drive and every time page file is accessed your hard drive is used.
  • If your laptop is overheating at 60 FPS, then get a laptop cooler. If you're willing to go further, purchase a $300 laptop. That area of price range is generally pretty decent, and doesn't overheat with heavy use

My laptop isn't overheating anymore after I underclocked it and after I used a fan for it, but because I can't use the FPS limiter I used to use the FPS is now jumping about, for example the fps could be at 47 in 1 area and then it jumps down to 22 FPS in another, v-sync doesn't help since the cap rate for v-sync is 60FPS and my laptop won't go that high since it's underclocked, and if I stopped underclocking it, it would probably get a little heaty even with the fans, (Maybe in the 63 to 70 range if I'm playing Crossfire with average graphics). I also can't get a new laptop until maybe 2 years later because of money.
  • All this technical mambojumbo and nobody talk about why it's a bad idea to cap fps...

Would make it much more balanced, because 'noob' and 'pro' depends 75% on your fps rate
