An Attempt at a GM Guide (1/2)
Hey, what's up everyone! This is my very first attempt at writing a guide, so I hope I did it somewhat right :P I'm in PubStarZ (and this was originally a PubStarZ forums release xD), and I'm one of the people in the clan where you'll see me constantly playing GM whenever I'm online. Unfortunately, I get my ass kicked out of half the games I join Getting to the point, this is a guide to get good enough to be accused of hacking everywhere you go! =D Anyway...
I promise that my guide (hopefully) will turn out to be more than these:
1. Kill the other team
2. Don't die
So with that, let's get started!
GLOBAL RISK - Let's kill some ghosts!
Hopefully you all knew this, but I'm going to say it anyways. The goal of the GR guys in GM is to kill the BL players (Ghosts) and defuse the C4 if the happen to plant it. With the obvious out of the way, let's get to the basics of being a decent GR player.
1. The GR Basics/ Playing Without Headphones - I see you, so I'll shoot you
A. Learn to shift-walk
Contrary to the popular belief, it is still possible to do well in GM without Headphones*. (You still need your volume turned on, however) This requires that you learn how to silent walk or shift-walk, unfortunately. This involves two easy steps:
1. Hold Shift
2. Walk**
This is imperative to hearing BL players running around and eventually pinpointing them with your headphones. When you hear BL footsteps, do the obvious and take a look around yourself. Odds are, they are chasing you or close enough for you to hear them (duh). If the footsteps decrease in volume, they are running away from where you happen to be and it's probably okay to continue on. If the footsteps remain constant or get higher in volume, they are running around where you are, and you should be wary of your surroundings until the footsteps taper off (NOTICE THIS DOES NOT SAY STOP. I'll address what to do in that situation later)
When you hear breath, it's a different story. When you hear breath, jump back and look out for a BL player to come out at you. If the breath came from your left speaker, look left (yea, I know. Hard right?) and same thing for the right speaker. If you use a mono speaker system, just be careful. Nothing much to work with on that.
B. Differentiate Between BL and GR walks - They run faster
You can bet that your teammates are going to be a lot louder than you (usually). In public games, they tend to run wherever they go. That being said, it becomes kind of a nuisance to listen to your teammates make noise while you're trying to listen for BL footsteps, even confusing at times. To tell the difference between the two, all you need to do is listen for one thing: The frequency of footsteps.
-GR players have a slower walking pace*** (Due to the guns)
-BL players have a higher pace (Because they have just melee weps)
@Remember that this never changes, whatever they use. Knife, axe, or shovel, almost no difference
If you listen for this, it'll make trying to figure who's moving a whole lot easier
C. Learn to burst/tap fire - More kills + Less bullets = Awesomeness
Nothing much to be said here. If you got into PubStarZ, I assume that you already know how to do this. As for it's application in GM, if you're playing without headphones I'd recommend to not fire bullets unless you see a ghost. DO NOT SPRAY when you hear breath (on your speakers) and nothing's moving. Just as said in part 1a, simply jump back and watch out for something you can definitely shoot at.
D. Turn on the Mini-map and Name tags and use the dynamic map - Location, Location, Location
These are three features which are pretty useful in any game mode. The mini-map is in the top left of your screen. Use it to find the location of the allies around you. Use the name tags for the same purpose. I wouldn't use the dynamic map (tilde key ~) for this, however. It takes up too much screen space. Although these features are useful for finding your allies, they become particularly useful for finding your DEAD allies. When someone dies, be sure to check your mini-map. The little "X" on it represents where they died. (Same goes for the dynamic map) When you see someone die, be sure to follow this procedure:
1. If you can spot the "X" on your mini-map, turn to that direction and be wary of anyone coming from there. Try to cut off one of the exits from that area of the map if you can. If you can see where they died on your mini-map, chances are they're nearer than you think
2. If you can't see it on your mini-map, open up your dynamic map and spot the "X" in the vicinity of where your ally died. Then, same procedure from step 1.
This information can also be useful as to expecting where the BL players are going to plant late in game.
*I'd highly recommend playing with headphones though. I'll say this again later.
**Thus "shift-walk" =D
***It does get confusing when you have an idiot running around with only a knife though
2. Headphones, Headphones, and Headphones - Those things that are like speakers...on your ears!
I'll go ahead and say this. If you can, PLAY WITH HEADPHONES. These things help out on GM more than some people think. I think these are highly underrated by the CF community in general. Anyway, let's go ahead and learn how to use our headphones!
A. Don't Forget! - You can't build a pyramid without a base!
Headphones are definitely NOT the only key to success in GM. All of the techniques (or whatever you want to call them) mentioned before are integral to using your headphones correctly and not to mention make them even relevant. If you haven't read the read the beginning part of the guide, I'd suggest you do so now. (Even if you do know them, would hurt to review, would it? xD)
B. Basic Guesswork - Finding a state in the US
Ok, so same principle here as with the speakers. If you hear noise on your left, they're on your left. If you hear noise on your right, they're on your right. If you hear noise coming from both speakers, they're in your Line-of-Sight (LOS). If the volume is loud, they're close. If the volume is soft, they're far. With this info, you can get a feel for the general area they're in (or where they're going).
@Remember: You can also hear through walls, so they could be on the other side, above you, etc.
C. Pinpointing - Finding the city in the state
Now that you know the general vicinity of where they are. You can begin the process of actually pinpointing them. Pinpointing is all about "centering" the ghost, and it's actually pretty simple. Just follow these steps and with a little practice, you'll be picking off campers left and right.
1. Start with your initial hearing and turn in the direction of the noise.
- If you heard a noise on your left, turn left. Same thing for right.
2. Adjust until the breath is coming equally from both your left and right headphones.
- Of course this does not mean stand still. If you can hear 'em, the ghost can most likely see you. Shift-Walk side-to-side and jump around a bit as you pinpoint. You get better as you practice.
- Practice with your eyes closed if you can. You get a lot better, quicker. (Hopefully with a friend, initially)
3. Check if they're in front of you or behind you
- When you have them "centered" they're not necessarily in front of you...yet. To check, just turn in a certain direction. (For the sake of example, I'm going to assume you turned left. If you turned right, just replace left with right and right with left. Simple.) If the breathe is louder in your left earphone, they're behind you. If it's louder in your right, they're in front of you.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 until they're in front of you.
- Congratulations! You've just pinpointed a ghost :P Although it may take time for the first times you try this, you'll get faster with practice.
5. Shoot the f**k out of them =D
- Hopefully I don't need to explain this step. After you've pinpointed, burst in front of you until you hit something. (Or if the ghost moves). Proceed accordingly (:
3. Map Specific Situations - Knowing is half the battle
I have a request to make here. It's very hard to explain without pictures of the GM maps, so if anyone could provide big pics of the maps for me it would be awesome. Otherwise, you guys just have to wait for this section.
As of now, I have a few favors to ask:
1. Other GM mainstays: Proofread this and see if I'm missing some situations, please.
2. If you're one of those people that accuse me of hacking on a regular basis, here's my secret. You have legit chams now.
3. Everyone else: ASK QUESTIONS about the guide or GM in general. I plan to include an FAQ in this.
This is a work in progress guys, it'll probably take me days to finish this guide completely. Help me along the way and let's see what we can work up (:
After I finish this one, it's on to the BL guide!

Nice guide, however you forgot that sometimes breathing is hard to cover when they are above you or below you, so if ur good, you can tell how far they are from you by the loudness of the breathing, and if you actually look at the possible hiding spots they could be when you find the lat. direction, think about where a ghost would hide, or the only possible places they could hide, then you have all the keys to ghost mode pwnage! Combine what you hear, and some simple logic of what you see, think like a ghost. and pwn!

Anyway, I think the ZP weps balance it out because the breath listeners have an advantage over 1st and 2nd gen bhoppers with knives. -
Nice work Adonis, but you forgot to add [JM]Panty as a major cause for ghosts to rage quit and start QQing and changing the tide of the match when he comes into the room xD
Make sure thats added.
Getting to the point; great GR guide Adonis, many people would sure to follow, its useful. -

wow really? why would u even bring this up -
Thank you Adonis for your guide.
When you finish it and add the BL side, be sure to remind them that it's GHOST Mode.
They are GHOSTS...
This means they are INVISIBLE, not INVINCIBLE...there's a difference.
It is highly important, as a ghost, to remember NOT to knife-rush someone who's pinpointing. It's basically the same thing as...well...bringing a knife to a gunfight. When you die the cause is obvious. Quit calling the person who killed you a hacker, noob, etc... and consider trying a different strategy next round, because if you knife-rush the pinpointer next round the result will likely be the same.
When you're watching someone pinpointing you the best thing you can do is try bunny hopping away from him so he loses the sound of your breathing.
If you're not a confident bunny hopper, RUN LIKE HELL!! Bounce (jump) from side to side while running. Swerve left and right to make a more difficult target. You're faster and can jump farther than your enemy.
Just remember, when you DO get to a seemingly safe spot, it's probably somewhere the GR is going to check (if they're smart) and most important, keep in mind that it takes around a second to a second-and-a-half for you to become fully invisible again. Don't QQ when you stopped and someone shoots you 2 seconds later, they were probably reloading.
