ping

The trend you are noticing with your ping is tricky due to the fact that many things could be causing slow-downs.
1. Your own internet connection, cables, router, modem, firewalls.
2. Crossfire's servers are unstable before, during, and shortly after patch times.
Ping is a measurement of how long it takes a packet of data to be sent from your computer to a crossfire server - and back. The number you see is in milliseconds (1000 ms = 1 sec).
Think practically about the slow downs that can occur during that packets journey.
The biggest factor that determines your ping is how close or far away you live to a crossfire server - not your internet connection, which is a common misconception.
If you lived right next to one of they're servers your ping would probably be 1-6
