  • you could make a computer for less than that chart (if you don't mind buying a cheap case and are willing to spend a lot of researching time reading reviews etc)
  • Wait for Q3 or Q4 because most of the new tech comes out during the fall or winter. We're talking about the next major leap in CPU and GPU architecture. Maybe not CPU since intel won't come out with 22nm till 2012.

But things to look forward to are:
    AMD Bulldozer
    Intel Ivy
    Nvidia Kepler

So I suggest you wait. Nvidia Kepler should be a real killer based on the suggested numbers.

But if you can't wait, here's my suggestion. If you like doing graphic design, video editing or all that rendering stuff, go with Nvidia. CUDA>Stream. If you just play games, AMD Radeon is a better choice. An AMD CPU is the clear option for you, but if you could bump yourself up to $1000, there's really no arguing. I5 2500K is the best CPU in the $200 range.

Also, very important, if you're confortable with overclocking/overvolting your hardware to get more performance, that changes the entire equation.
  • Anything over a $1000 budget and AMD would be unnecessary. Go look at every benchmark, the i5's destroy every AMD cpu out, including AMD's 6-core. If your intentions are building the most powerful computer for your money, Intel is the clear answer. If your intentions are to build a worthy computer, and the best that you can for your money, go AMD.

    800 euro's is around $1400 I believe? I'll build him an Intel-based PC.
