I highly doubt he's dead and agree with DdoTt.
I don't rememner the english word for "sozie" (french) but it's people who look like another person. That's most likely what happened here. They got the wrong guy. Things are just too weird. How everything happened seems too easy, there's no way he would've got caught so easily after so many years.
