In the age of freely available modeling software, laser cutters and 3D printers, shapes that must stay secret for security’s sake don’t stay secret for long. Especially, it turns out, when a reporter wielding an iPhone camera is around.
In this case, that reporter was me.
In June, I published a story about a German hacker who goes by the name “Ray.” Ray gave a presentation at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference in New York, demonstrating a new wrinkle in a very old aspect of physical security: handcuff keys. Using a widely available 3D printer or laser cutter, he showed that it’s possible to reproduce restricted keys for high-security handcuffs built by companies like Bonowi and Chubb, despite those manufacturers’ efforts to make sure that their keys only end up in the hands of police officers.
