Does'nt that mean your banned?
No, it's just a bug that most people experience (I thinks its Vista).
But for some reason running ccleaner once in a while to fix bugs and get the junk out of your pc helps for me to play longer without getting that error.
But since your getting it when you start it without playing it i guess it has something to do with your LAN. If you are in a proxy server you won't be able to play Crossfire. Even if you use Freedom server (yes i tried that and failed).
Added: Try fixing the bugs with ccleaner first. Maybe it works.

pritty sure some1 said on the forum they changed it to that to show your banned now but ye i did have this problem a few times i just turned off my modem/router for 20 seconds and turned it back on and logged in fine i think its just packet loss from the server to your network -
its not the them doing maintenance i have had the same issue since the new patch has come out! And no im not banned and no its not my anti virus and the common solutions page is USELESS and i have reinstalled over over with heaps of different methods and still nothing!!! And all crossfire can say is check the common solutions page! FWITS how about giving us an answer its been 4days already!

got the same exact problem with vista 32 aswell nothing works (NOTHING IVE DONE SO FAR) here is what i have done thus far run as administrator,turn firewall down, install 8 times and the same with unistalling too. Turn off avast antivirus, try downloading from every mirror, then all the other unnofficial sites. Put it as an exeption in the firewall (eventhough its off) Reboot my computer. uninstall internet explorer then install again.
Hey guys any more suggestions im a crack head and i need my fix (crossfire)<joke
