Go to your Task Manager -> Processes -> Close all Crossfire.exe, CF_patcher.exe, Gameguard.mon and Gameguard.des files and wait 5 minutes, then try to start Crossfire again.
If you cant patch Crossfire, reinstall it.

Hello!

I've got the same problem. I'll describe it:
About 9 days ago I was playing CF, after game my screen turn black, and my CF shut down.
I couldn't turn it on, the same error which is this topic. From that time, I'm following Your advices. I was reinstalling it many times with many diffrent mirrors. I did what you said in this topic, and nothing. But, when I'm starting game through the crossfire.exe in my CF folder, the gameguard shows, then nothing.

PS. I'm not English, sorry for my mistakes.

Ensure, that Crossfire.exe, Gameguard.des and Gameguard.mon files got full access through your Firewall and turn your Antivirus program off for the Installation. (If this Error persists, add a Exception into your Antivirus, that the above named files wont get blocked by your Antivirus program.)
Also if you got WIndows Vista / Windows 7, run the Setup and Gamestart later as Administrator.
