Well Growler is used more as a term. If you have xfire, you can use your Xfire to record in game work also.

Most of the competitive community and gaming communities in general are familiar with Ventrilo. I started off with Ventrilo myself and have found myself more comfortable managing it. Also, I'm very experienced with all the Administration tools on it so I'm like your FAQ person regarding Ventrilo Haha
