[CrossFire] Debate their Business Model ROUND1

Many of you know me from open beta. I came to the attention of the community when I intelligently QQ'd about everything from Brazilians to nerfing GP gain. As I don't know if I will remain for much longer (look for me 11.10.09 COD4-2) I want to check if the competitive/mature CF community is on the same pulse. If you're a n00b, fired up a flame torch already or just got off of /b/, go do something else, thanks.

CrossFire is a Free-to-Play game and attracts certain people. These kids don't have money and don't know how to make money (aka. contribute to society). Notice people playing a game that has an upfront cost don't hack much. Some can say the upfront cost is the initial "thank-you" to the game-devs...

Business models that rely on a free-game scheme WITHOUT advertisements will fail and this is why: there is no revenue/money model. The cash shop disqualifies the free-game scheme if it is the main source of money for game-devs, even though it is optional. Free-game schemes only attract those who can't afford games that have an up-front cost.

The cash shop ends up targeting "serious gamers" and "those who can pay" instead of those who can't afford. The fact that it attracted ANY of us serious gamers is pure luck +the fact that we were bored with COD4/CS:S/L4D/Crysis/S.T.A.L.K.E.R. And with new titles coming out this game will fast become a dead memory. Because CF can't hold our interests down with our old stats, the money we spent, and the glory/respect/hate coming from disenfranchised n00bs. (notice I didn't even get into hacks) We paid for CS:S/WoW and many have stopped playing that. What makes CF think we won't quit on them as well??

Saidin and GreyCloak, Send the message up that if they want to keep this a free game and don't resort to advertisements, they will soon be out of a job. I bet investors and VCs aren't even looking at the CrossFire business portfolio right now...

Comments

  • CrossFire WILL eventually die. Sooner then most people suspect perhaps.

Honestly, when you get into a game and you're the only person below 50 ping, while all others are 200+...something has to be done.
  • This game isn't meant for serious and competitive gamers otherwise there wouldn't be this ZP armor and heart grenade (c'mon). Considering their income come from the cash shop more stuff like these will be piling making the paying users have much more of an advantage over free users.

This is more a company than a game. If you are looking for serious gaming this isn't the place.

Well I see "serious gamers" and "paying gamers" as similar people. Most serious gamers pay for their games. And most people buy cash items for the stats, not the appearance.

The cash shop caters to people like us. Once we leave, game-devs lose their income.
  • I see those banners in the game maps and I think they are meant to be commercial but looks like devs can't catch some fish to pay them for that.
  • Ye. i think that heart nade killed this game for me.. plus its getting hard to find legit SND games now, it never used to be this bad.. =(

Well yeah, if someone is paying for a game then they probably are serious about it.
And if some paying gamers leave, others will come. Yet I've seen a lot of kriss + spop + armor + pink grenade spam baddies in pubs.

And some paying gamers get bored of the game and leave, then a new patch comes, they come back, buy some zp to get a new ZP gun, and get bored eventually again. Aslong as CF keeps making patches with variety then there will be more ZP buyers. If the paying gamers population decreases then they will add some overpowered ZP item and it will rise again. Company wins.
  • yes it seems like it is true that this game is not meant for competitive U.S play, even though the game IS for the U.S. The only people that have taken this game seriously is the EU scene..but this is because they have a legit professional league that keep EU players interested (ESL) that doesn't fail. U.S players has different tastes than the Asians I guess, because the other versions of Crossfire (basically all the asian ones) seems to do much better but this could be that they have everything released and I'm talking about the contents, weapons, maps, modes, etc.. Who knows..this game could come back up in a few years because right now it's still developing..how? I have no idea..since the game is already made and coded what else do they have to do but just release everything to make people happy. Maybe there's a reason they are not (can't?) or maybe its just a simple reason like to rake in income slowly by releasing small patches with 1-2 guns once every 2 months. I'll be looking forward to Crossfire a year from now, yes the game might be different but the game experience will always be the same, kids QQing.

Yeah, because the serious and competitive players who were big names in other games came over to CF to check it out. They didn't spend money and as such CF had to make a financial decision as to who to push products for.

Armor and ZP guns with more bullets give the lesser skilled paying player a better chance against those competitive m4 + deag pros.
  • Meh...it's just a game. There is a ton more to play. I wasted $20 on it. I should of just saved it and waited to get Modern Warfare 2. Now I deff don't have enough for it and I still play this but I'm getting bored with it fast.

ok we get every weapon and mode that is in every cf version
then what ?ppl would still want more so releasing things slowly is the best way to keep people on the edge of their toes for new patches
  • what happens whey they catchup to the other versions and finish releasing new content? I don't think the slow release of cash shop items was the attraction for other CF versions.

About the success differences between Chinese/Viet/US/Korean CF:
I think it comes down to either how CF is run or how it attracts gamers. It COULD be the latter. I do think the US version is unlucky because most of the national diversity happens on US version. You don't see all sorts of nationalities going for the Chinese version. 對不對?

Without going too far into stereotypes, I know the legacy-class Asians (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) have an insane amount of pride. To hack is quite dishonorable and shameful. It's like pulling out a gun during a normal HS fistfight (in the old days in America). Not only do I notice low levels of cheating in Asia, the Chinese/Japanese/Korean clans in the US CF are very strong and very legit. I leave it to your imagination about the other Asian nationalities..

Kids take after their parents so immaturity isn't much of an excuse. People have different takes and philosophies on life. And when Success means to do everything possible to win and that includes hacks, we get a problem that will never be wiped out. Unless we nuk'em all lol (american thing, lay off euros =3).

How twisted can it get? One person explains it like this. Those that don't hack are so naiive, we (hackers) must take it upon ourselves to educate/punish that person. We are doing a good thing! It's our responsibility!!

In other news, I agree that CF is taken much more seriously in Europe. Erecting servers in Europe is definitely the way to go.

I agree, iv played the Chinese version for months and have only once seen an obvious hacker, and that was a speed hacker in Zomby mode.. In SND its really quite great, in a pub the highest ranked player would call strats "radio ones" and everyone followed them to the specified site.. plus its just like CS with Dust and Inferno maps..

I think CF will end up just like war rock or SF.. mainly being played by kids who cant afford a good PC to play COD 5-6-7 or 8 on..
  • it is obviously dying as this thread progresses. i dont even wanna know how much crate money z8games received and still there is no european server and i can play at ping 150 minimum. its really not that serious of a game. in a few months it will be done.
