You know I went back and forth with that a few times. It depends how you read it.

If you say "an search and destroy room" it's wrong.
But if you pronounce just the letters it would be an.

Normally when people type an abbreviation, they pronounce it as the abbreviation.

If you type SWAT, normally you wouldn't be thinking "Special Weapons and Tactics Unit."

That's what abbreviations are for :O
