What is mouse dpi and how does it work?

Hi I have an old mouse has 800 DPI, people told me that the higher the DPI the better ownage in the game, and if this DPI is not good, what is the best one, cuz I wanna buy a new mouse.

IDK if thats against the rules to mention the mouse manufacturer, its is "SPEED".
